PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

It has been a real privilege to be Acting Principal for Term 1. I have really enjoyed the role and the powerful impact you can have on the direction of the school. I believe the school has had a really positive start.

There has been a real sense of calm around the school and classes seems settled into a positive routine of learning. The implementation of our Positive Behaviour Expectations and dedicated lessons to support its implementation may be the reason for this change. I want to acknowledge the hard work that all staff and students have made towards making Term 1 a success. The teachers have written and delivered engaging lessons, reinforced the behaviours we expect to see and celebrated student success with positive Compass posts home. The students have responded well to the changes, and I remain proud of the way they are following our reset on the Mobile Phone Policy.

I am really looking forward to seeing how our Positive Behaviour Expectations develops and strengthens across the year.

The whole school assembly was an opportunity to introduce our School Leaders for 2024 and to present the Dux of 2023. I believe that these two opportunities of leadership and success have the power to shape our year ahead.

Leadership is not about being in charge; it’s about taking responsibility, inspiring others and making a positive difference. Each one of us has the potential to be a leader in our own way, whether it’s by standing up for what’s right, lending a helping hand or simply leading by example.

Leadership is about listening to others and embracing diversity. It’s about bringing others along to feel valued and supported. I am really confident that our leadership team for this year will represent all students with integrity and determination.

Success, on the other hand is often seen as reaching a specific goal or achieving a certain level of recognition. But true success goes beyond material achievements. It’s about personal growth, resilience and making a meaningful impact on the world around us. It’s about having the courage to pursue our passions, the resilience to bounce back.

As leaders we need to lead with empathy and kindness, embrace the journey of success with optimism and commitment.
This view on leadership and success best reflects our 2023 DUX recipient on her whole education at Boronia K-12.

On behalf of the school community, we want to congratulate Sarah Colling for being the Dux of 2023. It is a great achievement because it reflects commitment, determination and I am sure at times sacrifice. Sarah spoke about following your passion and do what you love because then you are likely to do well. She offered advice to our current VCE students that you need to seek help and feedback back from your teachers and most importantly find balance in your life and continue to do what you enjoy.

A perpetual trophy for school Dux will now be displayed in the Main Office as a way of acknowledging learning achievement.

I look forward to working alongside you this year.

    SECONDARY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT

Term 1 was definitely an action-packed term, especially since it only lasted 9 weeks! For me, it was even shorter, as I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks on long service leave travelling across Tanzania. Student Progress and Parents Contacting Staff
Secondary School staff have already completed Mid-Term Progress reports in Week 5 and will complete End of Term 1 Progress reports over the school holidays. These reports will be released on the first day of Term 2 and will focus on expectations relating to student work habits as well as academic progress. Staff at Boronia K-12 welcome parent contact and are more than happy to discuss student progress and help clarify any issues that may arise.

In 2024, we have made the decision to hold our Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences after school hours so as not to interrupt the daily learning of our students. We will run two sessions over two days and parents can select which day and times they wish to attend. The first conference will be held on Wednesday 24th April from 3.30pm – 7.00pm and the second the following week on Tuesday 30th April from 3.30pm – 7.00pm. These meetings will be held onsite (face-to-face) and bookings can be made under the Conferences tab on Compass. Aside from these conferences, parents are also able to request a face-to-face meeting, phone conversation or email communication with staff at any time. It is important to make face to face appointments in advance, however, to ensure that the teacher is available.
    Uniform
Congratulations to the bulk of our students who are wearing correct school attire most of the time. We have found that students in Year 7 - 10 have particularly enjoyed the option of wearing their PE uniform for the entire day on the days they have PE/Health. Our Year 6 and Year 12 students have been sporting their unique year level jumpers which look terrific. Many staff members have also purchased and wear the Yr. 12 jumper as well as other items (vests, jackets, polos), proudly displaying the BK-12 logo.

We are eagerly awaiting the production of a new uniform item – a blue shirt. A School Council sub-committee has been investigating this addition to the College uniform for close to 18 months in response to feedback from parents and students. The current white shirt provides some challenges in keeping its crisp white appearance and female students will attest to the problems of the material being quite thin and see through. We hope to have the new, blue, chambray shirt available for purchase by the start of Term 4. In the meantime, white shirts (which will still remain part of the uniform for 2 years) can be purchased at a significant discount.
Just a reminder that if a student cannot wear an item of their uniform on any given day, they must bring a note from home and exchange this for a uniform pass from a member of their Sub School team. As the cooler weather starts to approach, we want to remind all students and parents that ’hoodies’ are not to be worn as an alternative uniform item. If a student has a genuine uniform emergency and is unable to wear their school jumper or jacket on any given day, we request that they wear a plain windcheater or jumper (without a hood) and provide a signed note from their parent or guardian explaining the reason for this as mentioned above. The school has a supply of spare jumpers and jackets for students to borrow, if necessary. Our classrooms are heated. We understand that transition to and from school as well as Recess and Lunch breaks can be chilly. We advise that students consider wearing a plain white T-shirt under their school shirt for extra warmth. Students who wear trousers may wish to wear stockings or skins under their pants and students are encouraged to wear a school cap for warmth.

    Donations of Clothing
We are always humbled by the generosity of members of our community who continue to donate uniform items that are no longer needed by their children. This clothing has been in great condition, freshly laundered and ready to be distributed to students and families that need a helping hand. Thank you for your on-going support. Families wishing to seek uniform assistance are asked to contact Ms. Kath Middleton or Nicole Costa on 9760 4900.
    NAPLAN
Our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students have now completed The National Assessment Programme. Tests were undertaken in Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. We anticipate results will be forwarded to schools and then onto families during the latter half of Term 2.

The NAPLAN results are useful in the following ways:

Students and Parents can use individual results to discuss student’s progress with teachers.

Teachers are able to use the results to identify students who may require extra support or
    further challenges in their learning.

Schools can use NAPLAN results to identify strengths and weaknesses in the teaching and learning programs, and also for goal setting in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy.

The Year 9 NAPLAN results may be used as part of the application process during Year 10 course selection for students wishing to apply to undertake a VCE Unit.
    School Photos
Proofing of photos has been completed and the printing process has started. AR Photos have provided an individualised flyer for each student, each with a unique code allowing parents/guardians to register online to access their child’s school photos. These flyers have been distributed by class teachers (Junior) and Learning Mentors (Secondary). The General Office also has a copy of family codes for those who have misplaced this flyer. For any questions regarding school photos please contact our office staff or contact Arthur Reed Photography directly.

    Lockers, valuables and mobile phones
We would like to remind parents and secondary students that it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they have a padlock to secure their locker. Students who have not arranged to supply a suitable padlock for their locker will need to purchase one from the General Office. It is important that students who bring laptops to school keep their devices very secure. The same applies to students who choose to bring mobile phones to school; these must be kept in lockers and not on the individual student’s person.

The intention behind the Department of Education’s rigorous mobile phone policy is to produce positive and supportive learning environments, which have minimal disruptions to student learning. Staff at Boronia have seen a distinct improvement in student class focus and participation with the absence of distraction from mobile phones. If parents have an urgent need to contact their child over the course of the day, they can leave a message at the school office.
    Safe and Relaxing Holiday
I wish all families and staff a safe and restful break. I look forward to seeing you all safe and sound on Monday 15th April. Please remember that Thursday 25th April is the ANZAC day public holiday. The school will also be having a Curriculum Day (pupil free) on Friday 26th April.

    SENIOR SCHOOL

How quickly First Term has come and gone in the Senior School with much happening over the course of the term for our Year 10, 11 and 12 students.

Two major school sports carnivals - the Swimming Sports held in week 3 of term and the more recently conducted Athletics Day - have taken place this term and both have been really well supported by our Senior School students. Our Year 12 students have gotten into the spirit of these days by dressing up in house colours and/or fancy dress to mark these occasions. It has been great to see the manner in which our Year 11 & Year 12 VCE Vocational Major students have embraced the responsibility of organising and conducting a variety of games and activities for the Foundation to Year 2 students on both of these days.

Comments from the Foundation to Year 2 teachers have been full of praise for the patience and kindness shown by the VM students towards the younger students and for the organising and conducting various activities. Well Done to these VM students for their effort and roles during these events!
Senior School students have also represented the school fantastically well in a range of Inter-School Sports Days held across the term, particularly Volleyball, and supervising staff have commented on how well our students have both performed and, even more importantly, conducted themselves on these days. Well Done to all students who have participated and represented the College!
Our Year 12 students were also involved in our “Thrive and Survive Day” held on Tuesday 27th February. This saw students participate in a variety of workshops and activities covering such things as relationships, study skills, healthy eating, sleeping habits, dealing with anxiety and stress and culminating in a session of yoga & mindfulness. Many students provided positive feedback on what an enjoyable and informative day it was.
Our Senior School Captains, Vinice B and Ollie J, recently participated in the GRIP Student Leadership Conference held in the city. This Conference focused specifically on training our student leaders for their role as school leaders and included workshops and presentations on a range of leadership topics and initiatives. Feedback about the day from Vinice and Ollie was very positive, and we will certainly be looking at other opportunities throughout the year to involve our Senior School student leaders in other similar leadership training events. A big thank-you to our Student Leadership Coordinator, Ms Rankine, for organising Vinice and Ollie’s participation in this event.
A number of Year 10 students have been participating in the Farm School Program this term, heading off to Woori Yallock every Tuesday. As part of this program, students participate in a wide range of practical activities at the Farm School, as well as undertaking a number of off-site activities and excursions. Students also undertake the Farm School Certificate program, which involves students completing work similar to that undertaken in the nationally recognised Certificate I in Conservation and Ecosystem Management. The Farm School uses agriculture, outdoor and environmental education as tools to engage students, build confidence and improve personal attributes such as social and team building skills.
Last week saw students from across Years 11 to 12 given the opportunity to attend the first day of the Australian Formula One Grand Prix.

The focus of this excursion was for it to serve as an introduction to the VCE VM Integrated Numeracy and Literacy Unit entitled “Hit the Road”, which explores topics such as road safety, buying and running a car, and other vehicle and road-related themes, as well as exposing students to career opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) related careers and industries, through the Innovation Hub located at the Albert Park circuit.

It was great to see many students enthusiastically embracing the opportunity to be part of these days. Many thanks to our Careers and Pathways Coordinator – Ms Bennett – for her work and efforts in securing places for the school to participate in this event, which was attended by many other schools and thousands of students.
It is also appropriate to acknowledge the way in which our Senior School students, have coped and adjusted to some staffing absences which unfortunately arose over the course of First term. This resulted in some disruption to some subjects, with some classes being taken by casual replacement teachers, and a small number of classes having to work independently in private study on a few occasions.
The maturity and cooperation displayed by the vast majority of students whenever this has proven necessary has been very gratifying, and students are to be congratulated on the way they have conducted themselves during these circumstances. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those Casual Replacement Teachers (CRTs) and BK-12 staff who have taken classes and organised work for other classes when the need has arisen.
In closing I would like to thank all Senior School students for their efforts both in and out of class over the course of First term, but also take this opportunity to remind them that the next term will also come and go just as quickly as the first one. It is important that all students use Term 2 to either consolidate on the strong start they have made to the year, or to bring about any improvements and adjustments they need to make in terms of their attendance, behaviour, work ethic, work completion and level of performance.

    Director of Senior School

    MIDDLE SCHOOL

As a cohort, our Middle School students have shown sound progress in their academic and personal development. Their commitment to learning, resilience and adaptability has been commendable. This has been made evident by the way students have adjusted to our new bell times, understood and adhered to our Positive Behaviour Expectations.

Some key moments from the Term include:
    Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 students had a great time at Ferngully Lodge during the second week of term. They participated in team-building activities and made the most of the opportunity to bond as a cohort by building friendships with their peers and getting to know their teachers too.

    1000 Steps Excursion
In Week 5, the Year 7s conquered the challenging 1000 Steps track, reaching the summit in hot conditions and as a result, gained a sense of accomplishment and resilience.

    Year 7 Open Afternoon
Parents had the chance to visit our school during the Year 7 Open Afternoon. It was pleasing to see our students confidently showcase their work and other achievements.

    KIOSC Excursion
Our Year 8 students visited the Knox Innovation, Opportunity, and Sustainability Centre (KIOSC) at Swinburne TAFE, engaging in hands-on activities which explored various technologies used to design and create music. The students enjoyed this excursion and hopefully had their curiosities ignited and inspired from it.

    School Sports
Year 7, 8 and 9 students have had opportunities to showcase their teamwork and athletic skills at various stages this term through participating in Volleyball and Tennis. These days are always a fantastic opportunity to continue learning the importance of discipline, communication, and working together. Our student's commitment to this was evident and they represented our school with pride.

We appreciate your ongoing partnership in nurturing our students’ potential. Wishing you a restful break and looking forward to the next term!

    Lyle D'Rozario
    Director of Middle School

    SECONDARY SCHOOL SPORT

I am delighted to extend my congratulations to all students who participated in the Interschool Sport activities during Term 1. Your dedication, sportsmanship and commitment to representing our College have been commendable.

Throughout the term, our students showcased outstanding performances in various sports including Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming and Athletics. Their participation not only demonstrated their athletic prowess but also embodied the College spirit and values. It was fantastic to witness the enthusiasm, teamwork and respect displayed by all participants, both on and off the field.

I would like to express my gratitude to the dedicated staff members who volunteered their time to coach and support our students in their sporting endeavours. Your guidance and encouragement have undoubtedly played a significant role in our students having a positive sporting experience.

I am delighted to announce that several of our students have achieved remarkable success in swimming with Dorotee H, Dylan H, Matthew J, Boyd H, Pawarit N and Charlee B progressing through division swimming and earning the opportunity to represent the College at the Eastern Metropolitan Swim held on Tuesday 26th March.

Looking ahead to Term 2, I am excited to announce that sign-up forms for sport activities are now available on Compass for those interested in participating. In Term 2, we will be offering AFL, Netball, and Badminton providing our students with even more opportunities to engage in physical activity, teamwork and friendly competition.

As we approach the end of Term 1, I encourage all students to make the most of the upcoming break by staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Whether it's participating in sports, going for a run or simply enjoying outdoor activities. Let's all strive to stay fit and energized during the break.

Once again, congratulations to all students on a fantastic Term 1 of Interschool Sport. Your achievements and sportsmanship have been commendable and I look forward to seeing continued success in the upcoming terms.

    JUNIOR SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

While it has been a short term, we have managed to pack quite a bit in!

We have welcomed our Foundation students and a number of new families to the Boronia K-12 Community and everyone has settled in so beautifully. The ‘vibe’ as you visit classes during learning time has been calm, orderly and so very productive.

The new timetable has taken a little bit to get used to but being able to prioritise the learning around the new Positive Behaviour Matrix and Kiara the Cockatoo helping us explore the different ways safety, resilience, respect and being willing to learn look like, sound like and feel like here. It has been amazing to see staff and students working through this and continuing to build a common language around what positive behaviours bring to our school.

Other community events that we have been privileged to explore this term include:
    • Whole School Swimming Carnival
    • Whole School Athletics Carnival
    • Dental Van visit
    • Clean Up Australia Day
    • F-2 Teddy Bear’s Picnic
    • Food Bank Food Fight
    • Easter Egg Hunt
There has been a big emphasis on Community for us across the College and important for us to continue that in Term 2 and beyond. We look forward to exploring different opportunities to continue to connect both across and beyond the College.

Children’s University through Swinburne is up and running again this year and we welcome new members. Look out for the new addition, the Children’s University bear who will be out and about with the CU students having adventures. We hope to share his adventures on social media.

    LIBRARY

    2024 Foundation - Year 12 Student Borrowing
The encouragement of reading for fun and reading for learning is promoted and assisted with the libraries wide range of resources. The library aims to support the school’s policies by providing the necessary resources for the key learning areas of the Curriculum Framework. We hope that students will continue to enjoy using the College Library throughout their educational journey at Boronia K-12 College.

    EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

    3 Year old Group

The 3-year-old children have settled into kindergarten extremely well, and we have had such a busy and exciting term.

On the 4th of March was Shrove Tuesday, and to celebrate this, Puggle children had a fun cooking experience making pancakes. The children loved watching the pancakes bubble and cook, but the highlight for our children was choosing either jam, butter, or honey and eating up the yummy pancakes.

The Puggles enjoyed connecting with the wider school community for Clean Up Australia Day. We stayed behind at school and helped the Foundation to Year 2's clean up our lovely school yards. They were little superstars and did an amazing job collecting two bags of rubbish.

    We are focusing on identity. Here are some activities and experiences we have done to help the children learn about identity;

Discussions that we are all different
We have made charts based on the children’s hair and eye colours.

    Family Tree
We have encouraged all families to bring in family photos; this is so our children feel a sense of belonging in our group.

    Self Portraits
Our children have had the opportunity to create their own self-portraits. We provided them with a person template and pencils: during this activity they could draw or colour their person that represented themselves.

We have had such a fun term.

    Police visit
One big highlight for this Term was a visit from two Victorian Police Officers to talk about their pivotal role in our community and the ways they ensure our safety. Their reassuring words encouraged us to view police officers as friendly figures, urging us to greet them with a high five or fist bump upon meeting them in our neighbourhood. A memorable learning moment was discovering a simple method to recall the emergency number 000 by using our fingers. Highlighting the day, we proudly donned junior constable badges and experienced sitting in the Highway Patrol Police car. Our excitement peaked as they departed, sounding the sirens and flashing the lights, prompting us to cover our ears in delighted anticipation.

    Friendship and teamwork
We have spent a lot of time this Term learning about friendship, kindness and working together as a team. We do this though games, projects, social stories, books and group discussions.

    Library visits
Each Monday morning we have our Library session up in the junior school Library. We all look forward to the visit, and especially enjoy seeing different teachers along the way to get to the Library. We share a story as group and follow it up with a discussion on the story. Sometimes we get our own book to look at and we play a game where we try to locate different objects in our picture story book such as ladybirds, dragons, ice cream, the sun.

    Harmony week collaborative project
The 3 and 4 year old children worked on a collaborative project to acknowledge and celebrate Harmony Day. Each child in our kinder was given one piece of paper to decorate and make unique, which when put together became a giant Harmony Week display.

    Dentist visit
Quite a few of us were able to visit the Dentist this Term which was a great school initiative that we were fortunate enough to be included in. For some of the ELC children it was the first time sitting in a dental chair and having a dentist look in their mouth. We all did really well and just have to remember to brush twice a day to keep our teeth strong and healthy

    WELLBEING

What a big term it has been for the wellbeing team with a few key events and changes.

    Wellbeing Team
We welcomed to the team, Mikayla Clark, who is our new school chaplain. Mikayla holds a Bachelor of Youth Work and comes with experience working with adolescents through her time working with Bridge Builders, a non-for-profit organisation working with teenage girls and facilitating events such as the UR Retreat. Mikayla will be working with students from Foundation to Year 9, so please say hi to her on a Monday or Wednesday.

We have also welcomed Tamara Magrath, Adolescent Health Nurse, to the team who is taking over from Deb Ellis who has been with us for four years. Tamara comes with a wealth of knowledge and we cannot wait to have her working with us, the GP and Nurse from Headspace Knox and the health and PE in her health promotion work.
    Foodbank Fundraising and Food Fight
Our biggest event of the term was fundraising for Foodbank and the Food Fight. Foodbank provide meals to 57,000 Victorians daily and provide the resources for us to have a Breakfast Club, Lunch Program and School Holiday Packs.

Thanks for everyone’s amazing generosity, we've already rallied together to raise a whopping 500,000 meals for our fellow Victorians in need!

To help encourage students to fundraise, the first 100 students with profiles received an Icy pole, 10 random students were drawn to have a lunch with the principal team and our two highest fundraising classes, 1/2B and 5/6C, had a VIP tent on the day!

Congratulations to all students who were fundraising online, thanks to their ongoing efforts, we have been able to fundraise over $8,500 and it is still rising.

The day of the food fight was colourful with a great buzz of excitement in the air with everyone getting involved. Thank you to all ELC to Year 12 students for getting involved, parents for coming to support and staff for making this event happen.

Parents and Students will be able to log onto the portal and begin ordering their prizes for the efforts from Thursday 28 March to 19 April. Prizes will then be distributed in Term 2.
    Year 7 Connections Group
As always, our goal is to support all students and in Term 2, James Latu (Youth Worker) and Amy Hayman (Mental Health Practitioner) will be running Year 7 Connections groups with a focus on problem solving, emotional literacy, communication, and self-esteem. Look out on Compass for an event to give consent.
    Clean up Australia Day
Friday March 1, our junior school students headed out into our surrounding areas to join in for Clean Up Australia Day. We headed out to Chandler Park, surrounding side streets and spent some time cleaning up our school grounds.

All students were safe, responsible, and respectful while out and about which made the event go off without a hitch and students collected a large amount of rubbish to help clean up our environment.
    Cultural Diversity Week
March 18-24 was Cultural Diversity Week, which is a time to celebrate all our heritages and embrace just how multicultural of a community we are. Students dressed in their cultural dress, pops of orange and staff had a lunch where they shared meals from their culture. It was great to see everyone get involved.

    BIG DAY OUT!

On Wednesday the 6th of March, our VCE VET musos kicked off their lunchtime concert series for 2024.

Titled ‘Big Day Out!, the VCE VET musicians created a performance that encompassed various artists and styles. Much like the festival of the past, students performed an array of different songs and entertained the BK12 crowd. Thank you to all students, staff and families of students who attended the performance on the day – we hope you all enjoyed the tunes in the sun.

    SECONDARY ART

    VCE Art Excursion

The year in Art kicked off with an early excursion into the city to view three different art exhibitions. Students got to have some fun exploring the variety of interactive artworks and experiences at the Triennial exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. In the afternoon, students ventured to Buxton Contemporary and fortyfivedownstairs for some more traditional gallery viewing.

    Year 9 Street Art

Year 9 Artists have been exploring different Street Art styles, including throw-ups, paste-ups and stencil art. They have learnt about the origins of street art and debated where the line is drawn between graffiti and art. Students created artworks using paint markers, spray paint and digital editing programs to create their own designs.

    Year 10 'Exploring the Everyday'

Year 10 Artists have focussed on developing their techniques, exploring watercolour and oil paint before choosing one to refine their painting skills. Students explored the theme of ‘The Everyday’, painting still life arrangements of objects they chose, which reflected a part of their day.

    CAREERS NEWS

It’s been a busy start to the year for the Careers Department with our Year 10s heading to the Victorian Careers & Employment Expo and VM students visiting the Grand Prix. Year 11 VET students have settled in well to the various institutes to participate in vocational training. On the Year 12 cohort day, students participated in a Career planning session and had the chance to think about where they might best use their current skills in future careers.
In the coming Terms we will be sending out all of our Year 10 students for work experience and some students have already organised their placement. Students who are yet to find a placement don’t worry, there are plenty of opportunities out there, so remember to be persistent and keep asking. You should use your local network, friends, family, sport coaches etc. who might be able to help you find what you’re after.

More exciting things ahead on the road to your dream career!

    Parent Payments
As parents are aware schools provide students with free instruction to fulfill the standard Victorian Curriculum and we assure you that all contributions are voluntary. Nevertheless, the ongoing support of our families has ensured that our school can continue to offer the best possible education and support for our students. On behalf of the school, I thank the many families who have taken the opportunity to contribute by way of voluntary contributions for items such as curriculum, ICT, wellbeing, school ground improvement etc.

The parent payment arrangements for 2024 are up on Compass. If families are yet to contribute to our voluntary contributions for 2024 we would appreciate any contribution at this time.

If you have any questions regarding Parent Payments, please feel free to contact me.
