International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP)
At Boronia K-12 College, we are proud to be an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, delivering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) from 3 & 4 Year Old Kindergarten through to Year 6. The IB curriculum framework offers a rigorous, challenging, and inspiring educational experience that engages students in meaningful learning.
Holistic and Collaborative Learning
Our Junior School programs focus on the holistic development of each child as an inquirer, both within the classroom and beyond. The PYP fosters the development of 21st-century skills through a constructivist approach, allowing students to build on their prior knowledge. Our goal is to cultivate internationally minded individuals who recognize their shared humanity and commitment to global stewardship, ultimately contributing to a better and more peaceful world.
The IB framework enables us to create a collaborative and inclusive learning environment that rewards individual research, community engagement, creativity, and global citizenship. It prepares students with the skills needed to navigate higher education and future careers successfully.
Inquiry-Based Learning
Inquiry is the cornerstone of our pedagogical approach in the Junior School, encouraging students to actively engage in and take responsibility for their own learning. This approach fosters a deeper understanding by involving students in synthesizing, analysing, and manipulating knowledge through various methods, including play and structured learning.
Inquiry can manifest in several ways, such as:
- Exploring, wondering, and questioning
- Connecting previous knowledge with current learning
- Collecting data and presenting findings
- Applying concepts to deepen understanding
- Formulating and testing theories
- Conducting research and seeking information
- Taking and defending positions
- Solving problems in diverse ways
Central to our curriculum development is the principle that purposeful, structured inquiry promotes meaningful learning and understanding. The Junior School’s curriculum is concept-driven to support this inquiry-based approach.
Key Concepts in the PYP
Our curriculum framework is built around eight key concepts, expressed as open-ended questions. These concepts provide both the initial impetus and the underlying structure for exploring the program’s content.
Form | What is it like? | Connection | How is it connected to other things? |
Function | How does it work? | Perspective | What are the points of view? |
Causation | Why is it like it is? | Responsibility | What is our responsibility? |
Change | How is it changing? | Reflection | How do we know? |
