Principal Update

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff,

It’s hard to believe we are already at the beginning of term 2. Last term has flew by and was incredibly full, with a wide range of learning experiences and opportunities for our students.

Across the school, there is a strong and noticeable sense of calm and positivity. This has been built through consistent effort from both staff and students, and it is something we are very proud of. Our focus now is to maintain this momentum, continuing what is working well, while always looking for ways to improve.

Staffing Update

Ms Lumsden will be commencing maternity leave from Monday 25 May. We thank her for her ongoing contribution and wish her all the very best for this exciting time. Laura Bogos will be stepping into the role, and we warmly welcome her to our school community.

Ms Sturrock will be taking long service leave for Term 2 as she embarks on a family trip around Australia. We wish Ms Sturrock a wonderful and well-deserved break. Ms Tandy will be joining our primary team during this time, and we look forward to having her on board.
These arrangements mean we remain fully staffed, supporting a consistent and stable learning environment for our students.

Elite Basketball Program

Our Elite Basketball Program has made a strong start under the guidance of Mr Hinds. Coaching partnerships with the Knox Basketball Association have recommenced, and we are building connections with the Melbourne Phoenix. A recent visit to the State Basketball Centre provided students with a fantastic opportunity to experience high-level facilities and training environments.

New Dance Studio and Fitness Centre

Our new Dance Studio and Fitness Centre are now fully operational. These spaces are already having a positive impact, with students enthusiastically engaging in electives and Physical Education classes in these high-quality facilities.

Open Night

On Tuesday 24 March, we held our Open Night and experienced a huge turnout of over 150 visitors. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our school, with guests commenting positively on the welcoming atmosphere, the quality of our programs, and the pride shown by both students and staff. We thank everyone who contributed to making the evening such a success.

Dig Bee – Our Scarecrow Entry

Our scarecrow, Dig Bee, is a creative and vibrant symbol of Boronia pride. Designed around the “B” from our school logo and topped with a bright sunflower, it represents growth, community and identity. Dig Bee has been entered into the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show competition, competing alongside schools from across Victoria—an exciting opportunity for our students to showcase their creativity.

Teacher Professional Learning

Our staff have continued to engage in a strong professional learning program aligned with our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). A key focus has been embedding our Instructional Model to ensure greater consistency across classrooms and reduce variability in student experience.

This term, staff have also been participating in a four-part series on the Science of Learning, exploring how the brain processes and retains information. This includes strategies to enhance student focus and reduce distractions, ensuring learning time is used as effectively as possible. This work aligns closely with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0.

A Term Full of Opportunity

Term 1 has been rich with experiences that have supported learning, connection and school pride. Highlights have included camps, excursions, sporting events, community partnerships, performances and academic challenges. Students have represented the school with pride across a wide range of activities, including:

  • Year 7 Ferngully Camp and Meet & Greet BBQ
  • Whole School Swimming Carnival and divisional competitions
  • Outdoor Education experiences, including the 1000 Steps, indoor rock climbing and a Mornington Peninsula day trip
  • Recreational Pursuits such as lawn bowls
  • Community engagement through the Menarock Aged Care project
  • KIOSC programs, including Green Energy Revolution and VCE Masterclasses in Physics and Biology
  • A range of sporting events including volleyball across multiple year levels
  • Cultural and community events such as Harmony Week, Knox Fest and The Basin Music Festival
  • The Victorian Maths Games Challenge and ELC Connections sessions
  • Preparations for the State School Spectacular
  • Whole School Athletics and primary athletics carnival

Each of these experiences contributes to a well-rounded education to develop the ‘Whole Student’ and reflects the breadth of opportunities available to our students.

Thank you to our staff, students and families for your ongoing support in making this such a successful and positive start to the year.

Sincerely,

Paul Broecker

Assistant Principal Report – Junior School

It was a wonderful first term and start to the year, with a renewed emphasis on our College Values as we start the learning journey again in 2026.

Community: Strengthening our connections beyond the school continues to be a key focus this term. Mr Broecker and I have been visiting 11 local kinder and childcare centres to explore opportunities to extend our wonderful programs into the wider community. We were thrilled to welcome Children’s House of Early Learning, along with our own kinder, to our POP into Prep Day earlier this term.

Our commitment to connection is also being brought to life through music, with Ms Crawford and a group of students sharing weekly performances at local centres on Tuesday mornings—a program that will continue next term. Looking ahead, Mr Stone and our student leaders will be visiting to support social and emotional learning and engage students in sport, alongside planned visits focused on reconciliation. Preparations for later in the year events such as our Book Week celebrations are also well underway, and we look forward to sharing these events with our community soon.

And then we have the community we are developing with our brand new cohort of preps! They are doing an amazing job (as are our teachers and support staff) learning how to work and play together.

Aspiration: End-of-term progress reports will be released on Thursday 3rd April, providing families with a snapshot of your child’s learning and progress across their classroom and specialist subjects, including Year 6 electives. These reports reflect a positive start to the 2026 school year and highlight how students are working towards our learning expectations.

We encourage families to take time to read and celebrate these reports together, using them as a starting point for setting goals for Term 2 and continuing to aspire to be the best learner possible. A special thank you to Mr Stone and our student leaders for leading a meaningful Community session this week, where students revisited our updated learning expectations and celebrated the achievements of Term 1.

Respect: Taking pride in our school is one of the simplest and most visible ways our students demonstrate respect for themselves and our wider community. Wearing full school uniform with pride—both at school and when travelling to and from school—helps showcase our shared values.

Following community feedback, we transitioned to a more streamlined uniform in the primary school, with the navy-blue school shirt replacing the green polo. Over the past 18 months, it has been wonderful to see students wearing this uniform with pride. As families plan for future uniform purchases, we would like to remind you that green polos will no longer be considered uniform from 2027. All junior school students will be expected to wear the navy-blue sports polo with navy bottoms. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to maintain high standards across our school.

Excellence: Over recent weeks, students in Years 3 and 5 participated in the NAPLAN assessments, completing tasks in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language, and Numeracy. With the assessments now largely online (except for Year 3 writing), NAPLAN provides schools and families with one way of understanding how students are progressing over time and how effectively our learning programs are supporting growth.

Throughout the testing period, our students approached each session with focus, maturity, and consideration for others. Their calm and positive approach reflected the strong learning habits we continue to build across the school, and we commend them for the way they represented our college.

It is important to remember that while NAPLAN offers useful information, it captures only a small part of a child’s learning journey. Skills such as creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, resilience, and personal growth are developed and demonstrated daily in classrooms and learning spaces, and these remain central to our shared understanding of excellence.

While it went by very fast, term 1 was a brilliant tribute to our College values. Keep aiming high!

Sincerely,

Cassandra Wright

Assistant Principal Report – Secondary

After an incredibly busy and rewarding first term, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the many positives across our secondary school. It has been a fantastic start to the year, with students demonstrating a strong commitment to their learning and embracing the opportunities presented to them.

Positive Start to the Year

It has been very pleasing to see how well students have settled into their classes and established productive routines. Across the term, we have continued to emphasise our core school values, community, aspiration, respect and excellence. These values have been clearly evident in classrooms and in the way students have approached their learning, supported one another, and engaged with staff.

NAPLAN 2026

Our Year 7 and 9 students recently completed NAPLAN testing, and I would like to commend them on the way they approached these assessments. Students demonstrated focus, perseverance, and maturity throughout the testing period, reflecting both aspiration in striving to do their best and respect for the process. We are very proud of how they represented our school.

Open Night Success

Our Open Night was a tremendous success and a wonderful showcase of everything that makes our school such a special place. It was particularly impressive to see over 60 of our students volunteer their time to support the evening. The pride they showed in presenting their school to prospective families was outstanding, and their enthusiasm and confidence left a lasting impression on all who attended. Events like this highlight the strong sense of community we have at Boronia K–12 College.

Student Achievement

A special congratulations to Owen S, who recently competed in the 2026 Riviera High Schools Championship for clay shooting. While Owen just missed out on securing a place, competing at this level is a fantastic achievement and we are extremely proud of his efforts and the way he represented our school.

Supporting Student Progress

For parents and carers of students in Years 10-12, you may have received one or more ‘at risk’ post via Compass. These notifications are designed to provide early communication where a student may have fallen below the required 90% attendance, has outstanding tasks (including coursework or hurdle tasks), or where work submitted is not yet at the expected standard. These posts are intended as a proactive measure to ensure students receive the support they need and have the opportunity to address any concerns in order to achieve a satisfactory (S) result for the unit. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Senior Sub-School team.

Following a successful Term 1, I would like to thank our students, staff, and families for their continued support and contribution to a positive school environment, and we look forward to continuing this strong momentum for Term 2 and beyond.

Warm regards,
Amy Mraz
Assistant Principal

What a fantastic second half of Term 1!

Our Middle School students have continued to build momentum, embracing every opportunity with energy, resilience and pride.

A highlight of the past few weeks was our Year 8 Interschool Volleyball, where both teams played their hearts out and represented the College superbly. A special shoutout to Zoe L and Aayan C, who were our standout performers on the day.

We were also incredibly proud of our Year 7 and Year 9 students during NAPLAN week. The calm, mature and responsible way students approached the week was a real credit to them.

Of course, the Athletics Carnival will be one to remember! Despite the cold, wind and rain, it was fantastic to see so many students getting involved, supporting each other and showing great spirit.

A huge congratulations to our Age Group Champions:

  • Year 7: Lucas A and Rogue D
  • Year 8: Vrishab V and Lilly C
  • Year 9: Marty A and Crystal E

Earlier in the term, Progress Reports were released, and our Middle School students engaged in thoughtful reflections on their learning. It has been fantastic to see students take ownership of their feedback, set clear goals for improvement, and make meaningful connections between their reports and our College values of Community, Aspiration, Respect and Excellence, recognising how these come to life in their everyday classroom experiences.

Thank you for your continued support a great term with plenty to be proud of!

Senior School Report

Congratulations to our Senior School students on completing what was a productive and positive Term 1. It has been pleasing to see students engage with their learning and take important steps towards a successful year ahead.

In Mentor, students across Years 10–12 participated in a range of activities, including self-development and career exploration through the Careers curriculum, as well as developing problem-solving skills through the Respectful Relationships program. These experiences are designed to help students build a strong foundation for a positive and productive Senior School journey.

Attendance and Study Habits

Attendance remains a critical factor in student success. We remind all students of the importance of arriving on time each morning and maintaining consistent attendance across all classes.

For our Year 12 students, this also includes attending and using all study periods productively. Strong attendance and effective use of time support students to stay on top of coursework and hurdle tasks, and ensure they are well positioned to perform at their best in SACs, SATs and examinations.

‘At Risk of N Result’ Notifications

Throughout the term, some students and families may have received ‘At Risk of N Result’ notifications. These are part of our early intervention process and are designed to provide timely support, not as a final outcome.

An ‘At Risk of N’ notification is a formal alert from a class teacher indicating that there are concerns a student may not satisfactorily complete a unit. It allows time for intervention and clarifies the actions required to avoid an unsatisfactory (N) result.

Students may receive an ‘At Risk’ notification due to:

  • incomplete, unsatisfactory or overdue coursework or hurdle tasks
  • SAC or SAT performance below 40%
  • attendance falling below the expected 90%

We encourage families to view these notifications as an opportunity to work in partnership with the school to support student success.

Mobile Phones and AirPods

A reminder that mobile phones and AirPods are not permitted during the school day and must be stored in lockers which are secured with a padlock. If seen, they will be confiscated for the remainder of the day. Repeated breaches or refusal to follow staff instructions will result in further consequences for failing to follow a reasonable instruction. We thank the majority of students for consistently meeting this expectation, which is compulsory across all government schools in Victoria.

In closing, I would like to personally thank Wayne Judge, who stepped out of retirement to support our school during my parental leave over the last four weeks of this term. Wayne’s dedication, experience and contribution to education have been outstanding, and while he will be dearly missed, we wish him all the very best in this next chapter.

Hope you had a safe and happy Easter break, and I look forward to a strong start to Term 2.

3 Year Old Early Years Kinder Program

3-Year-Old Kindergarten

Exploring Our Emotions

The children had a fantastic time using potato stamps to create expressive faces while developing fine motor skills. As they explored bright colours, shapes, and patterns, their creativity and imagination shone.

This sensory-rich activity also supported hand–eye coordination as they carefully placed each stamp. By adding eyes, noses, and lips, their artwork came to life with personality.

From happy smiles to grumpy frowns and calm expressions, the children explored a range of emotions, linking their creations to conversations about recognising and understanding feelings.

Family Identity Craft

Children have created their own family members using cardboard cut-outs, coloured wool for hair, and fabric pieces for clothing.

They loved choosing materials to represent the special people in their lives, we used our family photos for inspiration. Some shared who lives in their home, while others included extended family and important people. This experience supported children in celebrating their unique families and developing a strong sense of identity and belonging.

Routines and Transitions (Packing Up Together)

This term, we have focused on developing kinder routines and smooth transitions. A key part of this is creating a safe space by encouraging children to help clean up and pack away resources, reducing the risk of trips and falls.

After building a large train track outside, we invited a group of children to help pack up. We turned it into a game, with some children collecting red tracks and others black tracks, and challenged them to see how many they could fit into the tub. Making clean-up fun encourages everyone to participate.

Student visitors to our 3-year-old group

On Friday afternoons, our three-year-old group enjoyed visits from Year 12 students. The children were excited to meet the “big kids” and quickly felt comfortable, inviting them into their play.

Some went on an imaginative trip to McDonald’s, others used the swings, and a group practised basketball skills.

It was a lovely way to build connections, and we look forward to more visits.

Early Years – 4 Year Old Program

We were fortunate to have a friend from Grade 1 come in and teach us what he knew about butterflies and their life cycle. He brought in a picture he had created and showed us all the different stages, explaining each part to the group. After the visit, the children were captivated by the butterfly life cycle. We set up our exploration table with lots of different butterfly items. One of the favourites was ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We added our own real caterpillars in a cage so we could watch them grow. To our amazement and excitement this week we found one of our caterpillars had hatched from its cocoon and had turned into the most beautiful butterfly.

We were thrilled to introduce iPads to our kindergarten program this term! The children were buzzing with excitement as they explored this new way of learning and engaging with educational content. To ensure a safe and responsible digital environment, we began by creating an Online Safety Agreement with the students, teaching them how to stay safe while using technology. This important step helps our young learners understand the value of safe and respectful online behavior. The iPads are already being put to great use with the Reading Eggs program, where children are building essential literacy skills through fun and interactive activities. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm and confidence grow as they navigate new learning experiences with technology.

Wellbeing Wednesday has been a great introduction to our Program this Term. We set a whole group challenge to run laps of the oval while being mindful of safety and respectful of each other’s pace and abilities. The children showed great enthusiasm as they moved around the oval, running, jogging, and walking at their own speed. Many children encouraged their friends as they passed them and demonstrated awareness of others by leaving space and moving safely around the track. To support children’s agency and choice, they were able to decide whether they would like to run laps or stay in the middle of the oval chasing bubbles that Erin was blowing across the grass. Both experiences encouraged the children to move their bodies in different ways while having fun with their peers.

We were excited to join our school community for the annual Teddy Bear Picnic. While the weather wasn’t in our favour, our F–2 building was the perfect place for face painting and popcorn. Outside, the ELC families enjoyed a variety of activities including the parachute bear toss, and making music with Ms. Crawford as children followed beat patterns on the drums. Most of all, it was a joy to see our ELC and junior school community come together to share smiles, laughter, and special moments. This is a great way for us to connect new and existing families at BK–12.

Monty the Monstar Colour Fun Run Update

Our Monty the Monstar Colour Fun Run is off to a fantastic start! After launching just a month ago, we have already raised over $4,500, with more coming in each day. A big thank you to the 80 students who have registered and are actively fundraising online.

We’d like to recognise our current top fundraisers:

  • Students: Emily A (5/6B) and Asher D (7C)
  • Classes: 3/4A and 7C

We’ve loved celebrating student efforts through our weekly incentives. Our Foundation students enjoyed an icy pole party for having the most online profiles, and students who raised $20 or more were entered into a draw to win canteen vouchers. Congratulations to Cleo G, Gabriel S and Eleanor C!

Next up, students who have raised over $50 have gone into the draw to slime Mr Broecker on the day – we can’t wait!

Looking ahead, classes that reach their fundraising target will earn a pizza party, and our highest fundraising junior and secondary classes will enjoy a VIP tent experience on the day.

The Monty the Monstar Colour Fun Run will take place on the first Friday of Term 224 April 2026. Families can find the event on Compass and are reminded to provide consent.

There is still time to get involved, raising just $20 earns a prize! Funds raised will support improvements to our school, including additional seating around the oval and upgrades to junior play spaces.

Thank you for your continued support!

Doctors In Secondary Schools

Dr Nat and Nurse Beck have been busy in term 1 seeing 31 secondary students across 6 clinics. For those of you who don’t know about the clinic, please find info below and how to book next term!

What Is Harmony Week?

Harmony Week is an annual Australian celebration that recognises and embraces the nation’s cultural diversity. It runs during the week that includes 21 March, aligning with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Harmony Week focuses on inclusiveness, respect, and belonging for everyone.

The event began as Harmony Day in 1999 and was expanded to Harmony Week in 2019 to acknowledge the many diversity and inclusion activities happening across Australia.

Australia is considered one of the world’s most successful multicultural nations, with:

  • People from nearly 300 different ancestries,
  • Over half of residents born overseas or having a parent born overseas, and
  • More than 150 First Nations languages spoken.

Staff and students celebrated Harmony Week with flavours, music and fashion from around the world. Our staff shared a delicious multicultural lunch, and our students shone brightly in their beautiful traditional dress.

Upcoming Days of Significance in Term 2

  • Friday April 24 – Monty the Monstar Fun Run
  • Wednesday May 6 – Do it For Dolly
  • Friday June 5 – World Environment Day

On behalf of the wellbeing and inclusion team, we hope you had a restful, safe and happy easter and holiday break. Please see below of supports in our area if you or someone you know requires it.
