From Good to Great: Lifting Standards Together

As we embark on the second year of our four-year Strategic Plan for School Improvement, I want to share our vision for the months ahead. Our goals are clear: we are determined to enhance the daily experience and educational outcomes for every single student.

Moving from “Good to Great” as a school requires us to raise expectations across our entire learning environment. We are committed to ensuring every student achieves their personal best, though we recognise that adjusting to higher standards is a journey that takes time, persistence, and heart from both students and staff.

To support this growth, our staff have adopted a clear mantra: Predictable, Consistent, and Productive. We are making every minute count. Our staff meetings are now more purposeful and focused than ever. Currently, our team is working diligently to update our curriculum and implement a collective Instructional Model. This ensures that the way we plan and deliver lessons is high-quality, evidence-based, and consistent across every classroom.

Student Expectations: “No Opting Out”

We expect our students to bring their best selves to school every day. Our philosophy is simple: there is no opting out of learning. To ensure everyone can meet these higher standards, we have robust supports in place so that no student is left behind or held back. To create the best possible environment for success, we are focusing on several key areas:

  • Full School Uniform: Wearing our uniform with pride and a sense of belonging.
  • Punctuality: Arriving on time and ready to engage from the first bell.
  • Consistent Effort: Giving genuine focus to every task in class.
  • Living Our Values: Embodying Community, Aspiration, Respect, and Excellence (CARE).
  • Positive Behaviour Expectations (PBE): Maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all.

True transformation happens when the school and home work in harmony. With the continued support of our families, I am confident we can take this school from “Good to Great” in every possible way.

Culture shifts take time, but by working together, we will foster an environment where every student is encouraged, empowered, and truly able to thrive. Thank you for being our partners in this journey.

The Boronia K-12 Way

Last year we launched new College Values, Vision Statement, and Motto, reflecting our aspirations and growth. Our new values — Community, Aspiration, Respect, and Excellence — form the acronym CARE, reinforcing our commitment to ensuring no student is left behind.

A reminder that our updated Vision Statement aligns with the segments of our logo, now part of what we call the Boronia K-12 Way (BK12 Way).

Our new motto, Belong. Believe. Achieve., captures the heart of who we are and what we stand for.

Everything we do and stand for is captured in our college values, vision and motto. These values underpin the language we use and inform the way we work. It’s crucial to build the BK12 Way of working so we can establish and maintain a predictable, consistent and productive teaching and learning environment.

Gym Upgrade

As part of this year’s State Budget, the State Government has officially allocated $499,000 for a major upgrade to our Gymnasium!

I wish to extend my sincere thanks to MP Jackson Taylor for his advocacy and budget submission on our behalf.

It also shows that our persistence has paid off. It was noted that our previous applications for the Capital Works Grant over the last two years, while unsuccessful both times, strengthened our case considerably for this budget submission.

The project will include resurfacing the floor, new ceiling and acoustics. We are hoping to stretch the money further to include a new digital scoreboard and audio/visual set up. Unfortunately, bleacher seating will not be included nor heating or cooling at this stage however we are yet to meet with the Victorian School Building Authority.

ANZAC service

With a light breeze and the flags at half-mast against our beautiful mountain backdrop, the ANZAC service on Thursday 23 April was excellent. The inclusion of a bagpiper and the firing of the cannon — on the first go! — provided special BK12 touches.

I was incredibly proud of our students for their respectful attention. A big thank you to Mr Robinson and mature student leaders for leading the event.

Colour Run

On Friday, April 24, our school community came together for the Monty the Monstar Colour Run. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, and the day was filled with energy, laughter, and of course plenty of color!

A huge shout-out goes to Nicole Costa, our Director of Wellbeing, for her incredible work in organizing such a seamless and joyful event. Her efforts ensured that the day was a highlight of the term for students and staff alike.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of our students and the generosity of our community, we raised a fantastic total of $8,581.56. After costs, the college has retained $5,150 to put directly back into student facilities.

Do it for Dolly Day

On Wednesday 6 May, our school community turned blue to support Do It for Dolly Day, a powerful initiative dedicated to fundraising for Dolly’s Dream.

This event was a resounding success, driven by the leadership of our Student Voice Team. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Kelly, Mr. Stone, and the entire student leadership group for their coordination and passion in bringing this day to life.

Our students truly mobilised for this cause, demonstrating incredible initiative and heart. Their hard work resulted in the highest-fundraising free dress day in recent memory, raising a fantastic total of $595.60.

Beyond the money raised, this achievement sends a clear message about the culture we are building at our college. It shows that our students do genuinely care about the wellbeing of others, want to promote kindness and stand up against bullying in all its forms.

We are incredibly proud of our students for taking such a strong stand and showing that, at our school, kindness always wins. Thank you to every family who contributed to this amazing result!

National Youth Parliament Program

I’m pleased to share that Matthew P. has been selected to represent the seat of Aston in the National Youth Parliament Program. This is a week-long, all-expenses-paid opportunity for one student per electorate, running from Sunday 16 August to Thursday 20 August 2026. Congratulations, Matthew on this outstanding achievement.

Another Term Full of Opportunity
Term 2 has been rich with experiences that have supported learning, connection and school pride. In short, we are a small school with big school benefits!

I am continually amazed by how comprehensive our extra-curricular program is for a small school. Having worked in much larger schools, I can certainly say we offer a huge range of opportunities for students. To date this term, we’ve held the following events and excursions:

As these recent events highlight, our students enjoy a wide breadth of opportunities to learn and grow well beyond the classroom. This is the hallmark of a truly great school, providing a rich, vibrant experience that extends far beyond the core curriculum to build character, community, and school spirit.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our families for your ongoing partnership. This vital support comes in many forms, and we appreciate it all:

  • Encouraging learning and curiosity at home.
  • Volunteering your time as part of our Parents and Friends Association.
  • Contributing voluntary fees, which allow us to enhance our facilities and programs for every student.

We value our connection with you. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or my leadership team if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback. Together, we continue to build a school we can all be proud of.

Sincerely,

A Consistent Approach to Learning

At Boronia K–12 College, we are committed to providing every student with engaging, purposeful and high-quality learning experiences.

Over the past 18 months, staff have worked collaboratively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to explore current educational research and strengthen our teaching practices.

Across Prep to Year 12, our whole-school Instructional Model provides a consistent, evidence-based approach to teaching and learning. This consistency helps create calm, predictable classrooms where students know what to expect and can focus on learning.

Lessons begin with clear learning goals and short “Do Now” activities that use retrieval practice to strengthen previously learned knowledge. Teachers then explicitly model new concepts and skills, carefully checking for understanding throughout the lesson. Students are supported to practise and apply their learning with increasing independence while receiving targeted feedback.

While this may look different in a Prep writing lesson compared to a Year 12 Food Technology class, our commitment to consistent routines, structures and expectations across the College helps create learning environments where students can thrive.

Building Strong Readers with Little Learners Love Literacy

In Foundation to Year 2, students participate in the Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) program — a structured synthetic phonics approach designed to build confident readers and writers.

The program teaches students how sounds and letters work together to form words and sentences through carefully sequenced learning. Students participate in short, engaging lessons involving:

  • reading decodable texts
  • practising spelling patterns
  • building fluency and confidence
  • developing comprehension skills

Families play an important role in this journey, and regular reading and short practice sessions at home help strengthen children’s confidence and enjoyment of reading.

This term, Foundation to Year 2 students have been exploring the “code” of reading through Milo Monkey and his friends. To celebrate learning all of the Little Learners characters, students will participate in a special Milo celebration on Wednesday 10 June, including a dress-up day and opportunities to share learning with families.

Families can learn more here:
Little Learners Love Literacy – Parents and Carers

Developing Confident Mathematicians with EMP

At Boronia K–12 College, students also participate in the Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP), a structured, research-informed approach aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

Through explicit teaching, daily review and regular practice, students build confidence and fluency in mathematics while strengthening their understanding and recall of key skills and concepts.

Over time, students develop strong foundations in:

  • number and counting
  • mathematical fluency
  • problem-solving
  • measurement and patterns

Families can learn more here:
Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP)

As learning is not always linear, we encourage families to contact your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions about your child’s progress at any stage.

Learning is a journey, and we are proud of the growth our students continue to show each day. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to build strong foundations for future success and to ensure that our students “Belong, Believe and Achieve”.

Sincerely,

Cassandra Wright

Assistant Principal Report – Secondary

It has been a busy yet very positive start to Term 2 across the secondary school, with students already engaging in a wide range of learning opportunities, events and activities.

We began the term with our Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences, and I would like to thank families, students and staff for their involvement. These conferences play an important role in strengthening the partnership between home and school, while also providing students with valuable feedback and goal-setting opportunities to support their learning and growth. We encourage all families to continue engaging in these conversations throughout the year.

Students are currently taking part in the annual Attitudes to School Survey. This survey provides students with the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences about school life, wellbeing, learning and engagement. The feedback gathered is extremely valuable and helps schools identify areas of strength, as well as opportunities for improvement, to continue supporting positive student outcomes.

There have already been many highlights this term, including our ANZAC Day Assembly, where students demonstrated great respect and reflection in commemorating those who have served our country. Students in Years 8–10 also participated in the Smashed alcohol education incursion, which delivered important messages around decision-making, peer pressure and wellbeing in an engaging and thought-provoking way. Other highlights include our colour run and last week’s Do It For Dolly Day – what a term already!

Last week, we held our highly successful BK–12 Careers Expo. This event provided our senior students with valuable exposure to a wide range of career pathways, training opportunities and industry experiences. A huge thank you goes to our outstanding Careers Practitioner, Meaghan McLeod, for her organisation and dedication in coordinating such a successful event.

It has also been fantastic to see so many students representing the school at various interschool sporting events already this term. We thank staff and coaches for supporting these opportunities and commend our students for their participation, teamwork and sportsmanship.

As we move into the colder months, we would also like to remind families of our uniform expectations. Please note that hoodies are not permitted to be worn as part of the school uniform, even if a note from home is provided. We are also noticing an increase in students wearing black or grey tracksuit pants; however, only navy-blue tracksuit pants are permitted. If your child is out of uniform for the day, please provide them with a signed and dated note to present to either their Mentor Teacher or Sub-School office. We appreciate the support of families in maintaining our school’s uniform standards.

We look forward to celebrating Education Support Day this week. Our Education Support staff play an invaluable role in our school community each and every day. Their care, commitment and support make a significant difference to the learning and wellbeing of our students, and we sincerely thank them for all that they do.

Warm regards,
Amy Mraz

Middle School Report

As we reach the halfway point of Term 2, it has been fantastic to reflect on the energy and community involvement across our Middle School. The term began on a meaningful note with our ANZAC Day ceremony, where students showed great respect and maturity in commemorating those who have served our country. We then shifted gears into the excitement of the Monty the Monstar Fun Run, which brought plenty of laughter and enthusiasm across the school – with Year 7 Level Leader Mr Edwards being slimed proving a clear crowd favourite!

It was also wonderful to see a sea of blue throughout the Middle School for Do It For Dolly Day. Our Year 7 SVT leaders did an incredible job promoting the day and helping raise awareness and funds for anti-bullying programs in schools. The support shown by students highlighted the strong sense of care and community that exists within our Middle School.

This week, our Middle School boys netball teams represented the College at the Knox Divisional Boys Netball Tournament. It was a fantastic day of competition, learning and teamwork, with all students involved representing the College with enthusiasm and positivity.

There is also a real buzz of excitement building in Year 9 as City Experience rapidly approaches in Week 7. Students have now begun planning both their city inquiry and independent day task, a unique and exciting opportunity that encourages independence, problem-solving and real-world learning in the lead up to the week itself.

It has been a wonderful start to the term, and we look forward to an equally exciting second half of Term 2.

Senior School Report

It has been another busy and productive period in the Senior School, with students continuing to work through their coursework, hurdle tasks and assessments in the lead-up to satisfactorily completing their Semester 1 units.

Our Year 10 students are also preparing to undertake their upcoming Work Experience placements, an important opportunity for students to further explore possible career pathways and gain valuable workplace experience. Meanwhile, our Year 11 and 12 students are beginning preparations for their Semester 1 examinations, which will take place during Weeks 9 and 10.

One of the highlights of the term was our Year 12 students attending the VCE Careers Expo in the city, where they were able to explore a wide range of future study and career opportunities. This was followed by an amazing opportunity for all students in Years 10-12 to hear from several professionals across a range of industries, who generously shared their career journeys and advice. A common theme throughout these presentations was the importance of:

  • maintaining a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • following your passions and interests
  • being open to new experiences
  • embracing challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth
  • developing the confidence to communicate and network with people from all walks of life

A big thank you to our Careers Counsellor, Meaghan McLeod for the significant work she put into organising these valuable experiences for our students.

As the weather becomes colder, we also remind students and families of the importance of ensuring students have access to the correct school uniform. While the vast majority of students wear the BK12 uniform with pride, we remind families that hoodies and black trackpants are not permitted as part of the College uniform. Any families requiring support with uniform are encouraged to contact the Senior School team.

Information regarding the GAT, along with Year 11 and 12 examinations, will be shared over the coming weeks, so please stay tuned.

Library Visit: Stories and Etiquette

We visited the school’s library where we listened to some stories. We went through library etiquette and what is expected when we enter the library. Using visuals and demonstration, we explained the type of voice we use (Blue whisper voice), how we walk (walking is for inside), our active listening (sitting position), and raising our hand when we wish to speak (waiting until our name is called).

Feeling Mirror Play

As an extension of our feeling’s activity corner, children participated in a child-led “Feeling Mirror” experience. Using a visual board showing five core emotions — angry, sad, scared, happy, and worried — children explored different facial expressions while looking at themselves in the mirror.

This experience has been a wonderful way for children to recognise emotions in themselves and others. Children enjoyed copying facial expressions, naming feelings, and identifying emotions on their friends’ faces.

We also set up an area where we have the visual cards of the five core emotions on display where children can draw these emotions on paper.

Keeping Our Bodies Moving

Movement with coloured scarves and learning how to roll was a wonderful way for the children to stay active indoors during a rainy week when they were unable to spend as much time outside. Dancing with scarves encouraged the children to follow instructions and move their bodies in different ways — up and down, left to right, spinning in circles, and jumping like frogs.

Children also learnt important turn-taking skills as they lined up to show Vanessa how to roll safely and straight across the floor. They were careful, excited, and proud to demonstrate their rolling abilities to their peers.

Mother’s Day Morning Event

Children were happy to spend time with their mothers and loved ones during our Mother’s Day morning event.

During shared activities and play, children demonstrated joy and engagement as they smiled, pointed, and shared stories about their mums. Some children described activities they enjoy together, while others showed recognition of familiar faces and moments.

Music at BK-12

Music at Boronia K12 College

The Music Department at BK12 has been buzzing with performances, creativity, and exciting opportunities for students across all year levels throughout the semester. Our choir and BK12 band proudly performed at the school Open Night, with our Principal, Mr Broecker, joining us on stage playing the keyboard for a memorable evening of music and school spirit. We have also showcased our talents at assemblies throughout the term, honoured our community through performances at the ANZAC Day ceremony, and recently performed at the Basin Music Festival.

Our choir students have been working incredibly hard in rehearsals for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular and are eagerly preparing for their upcoming performances at the iconic John Cain Arena later this year. In addition, Ms Crawford and four of our choir students have been visiting all of our local early learning centres each week, building meaningful community connections while sharing the wonderful music program offered at BK12.

Across the classroom music program, students have been developing their confidence, creativity, and performance skills in a variety of exciting ways. Foundation students have been exploring the senses in music and discovering how music can enhance storytelling. In Year 1/2, students have been learning Solfege and developing their understanding of written music notation as they prepare for an exciting whole school performance later this term that will showcase their school pride.

Year 3/4 students have been strengthening their sight-reading skills while learning to play xylophones and glockenspiels, further developing their teamwork and musicianship. Meanwhile, students in Years 6/7 and 8/9 have been building skills on their chosen instruments — including keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and voice. After creating their own compositions in Term 1, students have now formed bands and are rehearsing collaboratively to prepare performances this term.

This is only the beginning of the exciting things happening in the Music Department this year. With our senior students coordinating and hosting the interschool Battle of the Bands in our Performing Arts Centre, and our Instrumental Music Concert on the 22nd of June, there are many exciting opportunities ahead to celebrate student talent and achievement. We look forward to sharing these performances with the BK12 community. You are very welcome to attend our upcoming events, so stay tuned for further details!
