Dear Parents, Carers, and School Community,

We have hit the ground running in Term 3! Our focus for the first week has been resetting good routines so every student is ready to learn.

Our staff mantra this term is to be Predictable, Consistent, and Productive. By providing welcoming, predictable routines and consistent learning expectations across all classes, we aim to ensure every student feels a strong sense of belonging.

We operate with an “All In” approach to learning – there is no opting out. We believe every student can achieve great outcomes when supported by quality teaching. This is a key part of our journey as we move our school from Good to Great.

A Quick Reminder on Classroom Equipment > To support this momentum, all secondary students in particular are expected to bring their laptop, workbooks, and a fully stocked pencil case to every class. A single pen is not enough for learning success! We kindly ask for your support at home in ensuring your child has all the necessary stationery and books ready each day.

Celebrating Student Success > We know our students are capable of outstanding things, and our recent NAPLAN results prove it! As shown in the graph below, our Year 9 Numeracy growth has ranked #1 among all secondary schools in the outer east for the last 3 years—an incredible achievement for our students and staff. (Note: Our school is represented by the orange bar).

2026 Student Attitudes to School Survey Results

I also mentioned in the last newsletter the 2026 Student Attitudes to School Survey results. Here’s the snapshot again in case you missed it last time.

• High Expectations and Focus on Learning: Our students feel highly motivated to reach their full potential. When asked if their teachers expect them to do their best, 94% of students agreed, continuing a steady upward trend. Our overall score for high expectations has jumped from 74% to 82% over the last four years.
• Sense of Belonging: Student perception of inclusion remains exceptionally strong, sitting at 91%. Additionally, 94% of students reported feeling that they receive ample opportunities to participate in class activities.
• Quality Teaching Time: Our classrooms are gaining fantastic momentum. Students are noticing less wasted time, with positive scores for effective teaching time jumping from 61% in 2023 to 70% in 2026.

These results reflect the dedication of our staff in embedding our collective Instructional Model, reinforcing our “No Opting Out” learning philosophy, and living our CARE values (Community, Aspiration, Respect and Excellence) alongside our school motto: Belong, Believe, Achieve.

Highlights from Term 3 So Far

Here is a look back at some of the major highlights, achievements, and programs from across our school this term.

Central Australia Trip

The Central Trip was a fantastic success. The cook and bus driver were impressed with our student’s engagement and behaviour throughout the trip. In fact, a past driver approached Mr Camille and requested to be part of a future trip. Congratulations to all our students and the staff who supported: Mr Camille (leader), Mr Barnes, Ms Crawford, Ms Costa and Ms Orpin.

Secondary Course Counselling

We are currently in the middle of the secondary course counselling process. We have strengthened this process over the last couple of years and there is now a very thorough process to ensure students and families can make informed decisions about their pathway and subject/elective selections. This is especially important for senior school as choosing the right senior pathway can make such a different to a student’s motivation and experience during their last 2 – 3 years of secondary school.

Both the Middle School and Senior School Handbooks have been updated and can be found via our website, under the Learning tab. To further support the selection process, a VCE Subject Expo was held on 22 July 2026 for our current Year 10 students to help them learn more about the electives on offer.

Rotary Skills Shed

On Monday 27 July we officially opened our new Rotary Skills Shed.  

Over 40 people attended this event including many special guests. The Skills Shed Program will run each term for a selected group of upper primary age students, this term we have seven grade 6 students participating in tradie stule hands on learning workshops, facilitated by teacher Ms Millan and guest tradespeople.

The Shed is also the new home for our secondary Hands-on Learning Program, which is excitingly expanding from one day to two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) next semester. Under the guidance of our artisan teachers—James Latu, Rhonda McMillan, and Nicole Costa – we will now be able to run two separate student groups.

Whole School Assembly

On Friday 17^th July we held our rescheduled end of Term 2 Whole School Assembly.

As always, students showcased their talents through performances by our College Choir and our Junior School, who performed our brand new school song! This song, composed by Ms Crawford and team, is designed to capture the creativity, confidence and dedication of those who are a part of our school community. This was a real treat and the secondary students enjoyed hearing it for the first time.

Throughout the assembly we recognised students who consistently demonstrate our CARE values through the presentation of our Positive Behaviour for Education (PBE) awards. We celebrated achievements in sport and instrumental music as well as heard from our Student Voice Team about their work throughout the term. This included a reflection on the Do It For Dolly Day initiative and sharing the extraordinary cheque for $595.60. We also had the privilege of having the team from The Boronia and Basin Community News come out to congratulate Kayla S, the recipient of the Young Writer’s Award for July.

Thank you to our families and community members who joined us to celebrate the many achievements of our students. Congratulations to all of our performers and award recipients—we are incredibly proud of you!

Senior School Formal

The Senior School Formal was a tremendous success, providing our students with a memorable evening of celebration. The night featured a lively dance floor, a popular photo booth, and a delicious buffet, all of which contributed to the wonderful atmosphere. In the week leading up to the event, we faced an unexpected challenge when our original venue, SkyHigh, temporarily closed, requiring us to secure an alternative venue at very short notice. We extend our sincere thanks to The Stamford Hotel for so generously accommodating us at the last minute, and to all the staff whose hard work, flexibility and support ensured the evening ran seamlessly. Their efforts made it possible for our students to enjoy such a fantastic and memorable occasion.

Grade 5 Discovery Day

We were delighted to welcome Year 5 students from The Basin Primary School and Boronia Heights Primary School for a Discovery Day on Friday 7^th August. The day provided students with an exciting glimpse into life at secondary school as they participated in a range of engaging sessions, including robotics, science, cooking, sport and woodwork. It was wonderful to see the students embrace new experiences, build confidence and enjoy learning alongside their peers. We thank both schools for joining us and look forward to welcoming many of these students back in the future.

Trivia Night

A wonderful evening was had by all at our School Trivia Night on Friday 7^th August. Thank you to everyone in our school community who came along and helped make the night such a fantastic success. A special thank you to Wayne Judge for keeping the evening lively and entertaining as our host, and to all the generous families and businesses who donated prizes for the night. Events such as these are a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy each other’s company and celebrate our school spirit. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the evening such a memorable one.

As all these events and programs highlight, our students enjoy an incredible breadth of opportunities to learn, grow, and build character well beyond the classroom. I believe this is the hallmark of a truly great school.

BK12 Basketball Academy (Coming 2027)

Following the success of our recent basketball programs, discussions with the Knox Basketball Association have paved the way for us to fully transition into a dedicated Basketball Academy starting in 2027!

While a program of this scale will take several years to fully mature, our upcoming stadium upgrade and a strong commitment from Knox Basketball—who are also connecting us with the Southeast Melbourne Phoenix—provide a spectacular opportunity.

• The Program (Years 6–9): Designed for students passionate about basketball and team sports, the curriculum will combine in-class basketball electives with specialized training and strength/conditioning sessions in our new Fitness Centre. Students will benefit from expert coaching provided by NBL1 coaches working alongside school staff.
• Junior Development (Grades 3–4): Our “Little Elites” Taster Program will build fundamental skills and connect directly with the Hoop Time competition.

Key Features of the Academy:

• Pro-Level Training: Weekly skill sessions with expert coaches and two strength/conditioning sessions per week.
• VIP Experiences: Interschool tournaments, State Basketball Centre visits, NBL player meet-and-greets, and free SEM Phoenix tickets.
• Global Opportunities: Potential international tours to New Zealand or China starting in 2027.
• Earn Qualifications: Opportunities to earn a Level 0 Referee qualification and official coaching accreditation.
• Next-Gen Facilities: Training in a brand-new, state-of-the-art gymnasium undergoing a massive upgrade in 2027.
• Career Pathways: We will be offering a VET Certificate III in Fitness starting in 2028.

Assistant Principal Report – Junior School

Junior School – Semester 2 Learning Preview

This semester, students will complete two exciting Units of Inquiry. Unlike previous years, the entire Junior School will explore one overarching theme each term. While each year level investigates its own age-appropriate big idea, sharing a common theme allows students and teachers to make connections across the school and collaborate on their learning.

This approach also provides greater flexibility throughout the term. When significant events such as Book Week arise, we can fully embrace these opportunities while still making meaningful progress in our inquiry learning.

Term 3 – Our Changing World

Throughout Term 3, students will investigate how the natural and human-made world changes over time. They will explore concepts such as seasons, weather, landscapes, resources, biodiversity, environmental sustainability and the impact humans have on the world around us. Students will also consider the ethical responsibilities we all share in caring for our environment.

Each year level will explore a different big idea:

• Foundation: People and animals rely on each other and adapt to changes in their environment.
• Years 1–2: Many different jobs contribute to the organisation and success of communities.
• Years 3–4: Natural cycles help all living things survive, and making responsible choices helps care for the Earth into the future.
• Years 5–6: Space exploration expands our understanding of our place in the universe.

Term 4 – Systems and Innovations

In Term 4, students will investigate the systems that support life, communities and societies. They will explore ecological, social, political, technological and economic systems, while examining how innovation shapes our lives and how ethical choices influence the future. Design thinking, scientific inquiry and problem-solving will be central to learning throughout the unit.

Each year level will investigate the following big ideas:

• Foundation: We can explore ideas and create new solutions.
• Years 1–2: Living things depend on systems to survive and grow.
• Years 3–4: Communities and groups rely on one another to work towards common goals.
• Years 5–6: Global partnerships and cooperation are essential for creating a sustainable future.

Coming Up in Term 3!

As we look ahead to the remainder of Term 3, students have some exciting events coming up.

• On Thursday 20 August our Year 5 and 6 students will visit Science Works for a day of adventure and inquiry.
• Monday 24 August will be a Whole School Dress Up Day to celebrate Children’s Book Week 2026 (22 August – 28 August). Please bring a gold coin donation to go towards the SVT-led fundraiser for School Improvement and come along dressed as your favourite book/literary or movie character! 
• We have our Father’s Day Stall running on Thursday 3 September, followed by our Father’s Day Breakfast on 4 September 2026.
• We will also host our Junior School Disco on Friday 11 September. Please ensure you have provided consent and payment for your child/children via Compass for this event by Friday 4 September. You can contact the General Office on (03) 9760 4900 with any questions regarding this event.

Staffing News

As we approach the midway point of Term 3, there are a few changes within our administration team.

I’m very pleased to announce that Jasmine Ames has returned from Family Leave after welcoming her third child, daughter Laney. Jasmine is a valued member of our office team, and we are delighted to welcome her back. On her return, Jasmine has taken on a new role within the team as our Accounts Receivable Officer. Welcome back, Jasmine!

On a bittersweet note, Toni Bellingham was successful in her application for a promotional position and commenced her new role this week at a Cranbourne Primary School. We are very proud of Toni and her achievement and wish her every success in her new position. She will certainly be missed by our staff and students.

Trivia Night

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Trivia Night last Friday evening. It was a fantastic night filled with plenty of fun, laughter and friendly competition — and, most importantly, the event raised an incredible $4,132.64 profit!

A special thank you to Bree Ibbotson for her leadership and organisation of the event. Bree did an amazing job. The night was a great success thanks to Bree and the wonderful support she received from the entire office team.

We’ll keep you posted on how the funds raised will be used. Thank you to our sponsors and everyone who came along and helped make the evening such a memorable event.

Early Years Kinder – 3-Year-Old Program

Incorporating Numeracy into Play

As we carefully threaded beads onto string our Puggles group strengthened their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and pincer grip.

We also explored early numeracy concepts by counting our beads, comparing longer and shorter strings, recognising numbers, and creating simple patterns.

By using mathematical language during play, we are building confidence with early numeracy in a fun and meaningful way.

Puggle’s Puppet Theatre

Puggles have enjoyed using puppets to explore storytelling, imaginative play and everyday social situations such as sharing toys, waiting for a turn and asking to join in play.

Some of us enthusiastically recreated The Three Little Pigs, a story we enjoyed reading together last term. We have demonstrated our growing understanding of dramatic play by closing the curtains while the show was “getting ready” and proudly announcing to their audience when the performance was about to begin.

With support from educators, we learnt how to bring our puppets to life by hiding our own bodies and pretending the puppets were doing the talking. This encouraged children to use their imagination, develop their storytelling skills and confidently communicate their ideas.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Story

Puggles enjoyed reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We explored the different foods the caterpillar ate throughout the story and practised our counting skills by counting each type of fruit together. We also learnt about the amazing life cycle of a caterpillar, discovering how it forms a cocoon before transforming into a beautiful butterfly.

Together, we talked about which foods help our bodies grow strong and healthy and shared our favourite healthy foods. Strawberries and apples were the most popular choices!

To enhance our learning experience, Educators helped us retell the story on the blank felt book. While reading through each page of the original story, we worked together counting out each item the Caterpillar ate each day and collecting the felt food to add to our book. We were able to identify pictorial similarities with the felt food and developed our thinking and arranging to achieve an accurate recall of the story.

Recyclable Loose Parts

This term we introduced the recyclable loose parts area where children are invited to select their own items to design and create something of their own choice, giving them a sense of agency. Intentional teaching opportunities were presented through fastening methods, like using sticky tape to fasten one object to another and practiced using glue to stick.

In keeping with the focus on recycled materials and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, we decided to create our own caterpillars and butterflies.

Early Years Kinder – 4-Year-Old Program

This term, our 4-year-old Kinder children have been excited to begin our new Beyond the Gate program. Each Wednesday, we step beyond the Kindergarten gates to explore our wider school and local community, including the Foundation classroom, Chandler Park and Tormore Reserve.

Before our adventures began, we focused on community safety, learning with Seemore Safety about how to keep ourselves and our friends safe while out and about. Our visits to the Foundation classroom form an important part of our School Readiness program, giving children the opportunity to experience a classroom environment, build confidence, develop independence and become familiar with school routines in a fun and supportive way.

As we continue to explore Chandler Park and Tormore Reserve, the children will have the opportunity to connect with nature, develop gross motor skills, build resilience through appropriate risk-taking, strengthen problem-solving and decision-making skills, and learn how to safely navigate different environments. These experiences also encourage teamwork, communication, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging within our local community.

The Beyond the Gate program provides rich, real-world learning experiences that extend beyond the Kindergarten setting, helping children to build confidence, independence and life skills that they will carry with them into school and beyond.

Senior School Report

Term 3 is well underway, and it has already been an incredibly busy and important period for our Senior School students.

Across Years 10 and 11, we have begun reviewing students’ academic progress and planning their pathways for 2027. Students are being encouraged to reflect carefully on their achievements, interests, learning needs and future goals as they consider the courses and subjects that will best support their next steps. Course counselling provides an important opportunity for students, families and staff to work together to develop purposeful and achievable plans for the years ahead.

For our Year 12 students, this is traditionally the busiest and most demanding time of the school year. Students are continuing their Unit 4 studies while also beginning to turn their attention towards exam preparation. Maintaining consistent attendance, including arriving on time each morning, meeting deadlines and establishing effective study routines will be essential throughout the remainder of Term 3. We encourage all Year 12 students to continue seeking support from their teachers and making the most of every learning opportunity available to them.

Academics aside, the highlight of the term so far was undoubtedly last week’s Year 11/12 Formal. We are extremely grateful to The Stamford Inn for accommodating our event at very short notice and helping us provide students with a memorable evening filled with laughter, dancing and positive memories. A massive shout-out once again goes to our amazing staff, particularly our administration team. Without their willingness to go the extra mile for our students and wider community, we may not have been able to hold the formal.

We look forward to supporting all Senior School students throughout the remainder of what promises to be a productive and rewarding Term 3.

Middle School Report – A Busy Start to Term 3!

It has been a busy and positive start to Term 3 across the Middle School, with plenty happening for our Year 7, 8 and 9 students.

Our Year 9 students have completed their Morrisby interviews and have begun course counselling this week as they start thinking about their subjects and pathways for 2027. Later in the term, they have Interschool Basketball to look forward to, while we will also begin preparations for the Year 9 Kilcunda Camp that is set to run in the middle of Term 4. Parents and carers are reminded to keep an eye out for the camp event on Compass in the next couple of weeks, with further information to come.

Our Year 8 students enjoyed a successful day out at Interschool Basketball in Week 4 and will begin course counselling for 2027 in Week 6.

Our Year 7 students will join them in course counselling during Week 6 and are looking forward to a big Interschool Basketball tournament, with plenty of students already signing up to represent the school.

It has also been fantastic to see our revamped Hands On Learning Program return last week, featuring many of our Year 8 and 9 students. The new groups have made a brilliant start, planning, working together and building positive connections. A huge shout out must go to Nicole, James and Ms McMillan, who have been the driving force behind the program and all of its success.

There is plenty more to come, and we look forward to seeing our Middle School students continue to get involved and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

Wellbeing & Inclusion Report

Hands on Learning Program turns 1!

We can’t believe that our Hands on Learning program turned 1 in July. The hands on learning group have achieved a lot in their first year with some big accomplishments around the school such as building the greenhouse, creating the brainwaves boxes, connect four for the café and the biggest achievement of them all is fitting out our new Youth Skills Shed that will be the HoL crew’s new home.

Another exciting update is that hands on learning has now expanded to two days! This allows more students to be part of the program and work on a lot more and bigger projects around the school.

We are always looking for donations, so please see the flyer below if you know of anyone or have anything that you are able to donate to the program. We wouldn’t have been able to complete the fit out of the youth skills shed without donations from some major support from Bowens Mount Evelyn, Burton Industries (Kilsyth South), Bunnings Bayswater, Rotary of Boronia, Westfield and DeWalt.

Dr Nat and Nurse Beck have been working hard to support our students through the Doctors in Secondary School’s Program which has now moved to clinic running every Friday.

All students from Years 7 to 12 can see the doctor or nurse on their own.

Elite Basketball Program

The Elite Basketball Program has made an exciting start this semester, providing students in Years 6 and 7 with opportunities to develop their basketball skills, knowledge and understanding of high-performance sport.

A major highlight of the program has been the continued growth of our partnership with the Knox Basketball Grassroots Program. Each week, NBL1 Knox Raiders Women’s Development coach and Grassroots Program Coordinator Hannah de Kretser has visited the school to support the delivery of practical basketball sessions. These sessions have helped students improve their individual skills, teamwork, communication and understanding of different game situations.

Hannah has also contributed to several theory lessons, helping students connect their classroom learning with the expectations and experiences of athletes and coaches competing at higher levels. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and willingness to share her experiences have been extremely valuable, giving students an insight into training methods, coaching, preparation and pathways within basketball.

Students recently travelled to the State Basketball Centre for an excursion, where they explored the facilities and observed the type of environment used by high-level athletes and teams. This experience allowed students to see how professional training facilities operate and helped bring their classroom learning to life. Students were also generously provided with tickets to attend the Knox Raiders NBL1 Women’s Qualifying final where they saw Hannah apart of the coaching staff, giving them another opportunity to experience high-level basketball firsthand.

We are looking forward to building on these experiences throughout the remainder of the semester and into Term 4. The program will continue its partnership with Knox Basketball, with another visit to the State Basketball Centre already booked. Students will also participate in a new excursion to Ball 360 in Cranbourne, where they will take part in further basketball development and training activities. We thank Hannah and the Knox Basketball Team for their continued support of our students and the Elite Basketball Program.

Year 5 Green Grand Prix – Tinkercad Design Workshop

As part of our exciting Green Grand Prix, our Year 5 students were fortunate to welcome Nicky from Monash University for a hands-on Tinkercad workshop.

Using iPads, students learned how to use Tinkercad, a 3D design program, to create their own driver figurines ready for 3D printing. Throughout the session, students developed valuable skills in digital design, spatial thinking, creativity, precision, and problem-solving while learning how digital models are designed for real-world production.

Once printed, these unique figurines will become the drivers of the vehicles students have designed and built from recycled materials. Powered by Sphero robots, the vehicles will soon be put through a series of exciting Green Grand Prix challenges that will test their design, engineering and coding skills.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and are eagerly looking forward to the next Monash University incursion, where they will put their creations to the test!

Congratulations, Foundation Students!

Our Foundation students have been eagerly counting down the days to the much-anticipated 100 Days of School, and what a wonderful celebration it was!

The day began in true VIP style, with our students dressing to impress as they walked the red carpet and posed for photos in front of our glamorous photo wall. Their smiles and excitement set the tone for a truly memorable day.

Students then made their way to the Performing Arts Building, where they proudly presented their special 100 Days of School speeches to their families, Grade 5 Buddies, and our kindergarten visitors. We were incredibly proud of the confidence, enthusiasm, and effort each student put into writing and delivering their speeches. It was a joy to see just how much they have grown over their first 100 days of learning.

After the presentations, students enjoyed some delicious cupcakes before taking part in a variety of fun and engaging 100 Days of School activities. From counting and creating to laughing and celebrating together, the day was filled with smiles, learning, and special memories.

Congratulations to our amazing Foundation students on reaching this exciting milestone. We can’t wait to see all they continue to achieve throughout the rest of the year!

Foundation-Grade 2: Our Changing World

This term, our Foundation–Grade 2 students have been learning all about ‘Our Changing World’. They have been discovering how the world around us changes and grows, exploring everything from the seasons and weather to landscapes, sustainability, biodiversity, and how people and animals depend on each other and adapt to their environments.

One of the highlights of the term was our exciting excursion to Myuna Farm, where our learning came to life! Students had the opportunity to visit the nursery and meet some of the adorable baby animals. The fluffy bunnies were a favourite, with everyone amazed by just how soft their fur was.

There were plenty of exciting experiences throughout the day, including a fun tractor ride through giant muddy puddles, spotting fruit bats in the wetlands, and feeding some of the farm’s larger animals. During the farm show, students learnt about how farm animals provide us with important resources, such as milk, and many even had the chance to milk a goat—a memorable experience for everyone!

Of course, no trip to the farm would be complete without our gumboots! Splashing through muddy puddles brought lots of smiles and laughter, making it a day to remember.

It was a fantastic day of hands-on learning, curiosity, and fun, and a wonderful way to bring our classroom learning into the real world. We are so proud of the enthusiasm, kindness, and curiosity our students showed throughout the day.

Library Update

CBCA Book Week | Symphony Of Stories | 22-28 August 2026

During Week 7 BK12 College Library will be celebrating CBCA Book Week. The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) celebrates its annual Children’s Book Week© on the 22 August to 28 August 2026. This year’s theme is “SYMPHONY OF STORIES”.

In the Library, during the month of August, Boronia K-12 College students and staff can read the 2026 CBCA’s Shortlisted Early Childhood and Picture Book category Book Week books and vote for which book week books you feel deserve to win our “Boronia K-12 College Student Choice Book Awards”.

The books are currently on display in our Library and can be read during library sessions or during lunchtimes when the library is open.

Student Borrowing Guidelines

All primary and secondary classes will have opportunities to visit the College Library on a weekly basis to borrow books for their independent reading programs. While the ELC classes with Michelle and team will visit the College Library on a regular basis for a story and the occasional activity.

​Library Bags

All Foundation to Year 6​ students require a library bag to help protect their library books if they wish to take them home to read. 

Number of books students can borrow:

Foundation: 1 book

Year 1 & Year 2: up to 2 books

Year 3 – Year 6: up to 4 books

Year 7 – Year 12: up to 4 books

Loan period is 14 days

All students can borrow library books for up to 14 days. Students who require more time to finish reading books can renew books any time within the 14-day loan period. 

​Overdue library books

Students who have overdue library books will not be able to borrow until all overdue books have been cleared either by returning or renewing their books. 

If you become aware that your student’s library book is lost or damaged, please let me know, as this will assist in avoiding students having unresolved overdue loans.

Please encourage your students to look after their library books and return or re-borrow their books on time as this will avoid disappointment.
