Assistant Principal of Secondary Report

As we approach the end of Term 3, I find myself reflecting on another very busy and positive term across our secondary school. It has been pleasing to see students continuing to grow in their independence and learning habits, while also taking part in the many opportunities and activities that make our school community such a great place to be.

Student/Parent Teacher Conferences

I would like to sincerely thank all of the parents and carers who took the time to attend our recent Student/Parent Teacher Conferences. These conversations are such an important part of supporting our students. They provide an opportunity for teachers, students, and families to celebrate achievements, identify areas for growth, and work together to determine how we can best support each student moving forward. When students know that the adults around them are working together and sharing the same expectations, they are better placed to take ownership of their learning and make positive progress.

Ready to Learn Blitz

Earlier this term, we ran a two-week Ready to Learn blitz across the secondary school. The focus was on a very simple but important aspect of learning — arriving to class ready to learn, with all of the equipment required for the lesson.

During the two weeks, whenever a student arrived without the necessary equipment, communication was sent home to parents/carers. Students were also provided with additional reminders and support to help them develop more consistent routines. I was particularly pleased to see the significant improvement we observed across all year levels as the blitz progressed.

While the Ready to Learn blitz has now finished, the expectations have not changed. We encourage all students to continue these improved habits and to take responsibility for arriving to every lesson prepared and ready to engage. Having the right equipment may seem like a small thing, but it makes a real difference to a student’s ability to settle quickly and make the most of their learning time.

Celebrating Science, Health and PE

A big thank you to our Science staff for providing students with a fantastic week of activities as part of Science Week. Bird-watching bingo was my personal favourite! It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and curiosity these activities generated, and I appreciate the effort that went into creating engaging experiences for our students.

I would also like to acknowledge our Health and PE staff for their work during Health and PE Week. The activities provided students with opportunities to be active, learn, and think about the important role that health and wellbeing plays in their lives. Thank you to both teams for going above and beyond to provide these additional opportunities for our students.

Year 12 – The Final Chapter

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our Year 12 students as they approach the end of their schooling. This is an exciting and significant time for them, and it has been wonderful to see so many of our students working extremely hard as they prepare for their upcoming examinations.

There is no doubt that the final weeks of Year 12 can be challenging, and I encourage our students to keep going, stay focused, and look after themselves throughout this busy period. Their journey through secondary school has required persistence, resilience, and aspiration, and we are incredibly proud of the young people they have become.

As we head towards the end of Term 3, I would like to thank our students, staff, and families for another wonderful term. I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned break, takes the opportunity to recharge, and returns ready for what will be an exciting final term of the year.

Assistant Principal Report – Junior School

Junior School – Semester 2 Learning Preview

This semester, students will complete two exciting Units of Inquiry. Unlike previous years, the entire Junior School will explore one overarching theme each term. While each year level investigates its own age-appropriate big idea, sharing a common theme allows students and teachers to make connections across the school and collaborate on their learning.

This approach also provides greater flexibility throughout the term. When significant events such as Book Week arise, we can fully embrace these opportunities while still making meaningful progress in our inquiry learning.

Term 3 – Our Changing World

Throughout Term 3, students will investigate how the natural and human-made world changes over time. They will explore concepts such as seasons, weather, landscapes, resources, biodiversity, environmental sustainability and the impact humans have on the world around us. Students will also consider the ethical responsibilities we all share in caring for our environment.

Each year level will explore a different big idea:

• Foundation: People and animals rely on each other and adapt to changes in their environment.
• Years 1–2: Many different jobs contribute to the organisation and success of communities.
• Years 3–4: Natural cycles help all living things survive, and making responsible choices helps care for the Earth into the future.
• Years 5–6: Space exploration expands our understanding of our place in the universe.

Term 4 – Systems and Innovations

In Term 4, students will investigate the systems that support life, communities and societies. They will explore ecological, social, political, technological and economic systems, while examining how innovation shapes our lives and how ethical choices influence the future. Design thinking, scientific inquiry and problem-solving will be central to learning throughout the unit.

Each year level will investigate the following big ideas:

• Foundation: We can explore ideas and create new solutions.
• Years 1–2: Living things depend on systems to survive and grow.
• Years 3–4: Communities and groups rely on one another to work towards common goals.
• Years 5–6: Global partnerships and cooperation are essential for creating a sustainable future.

Coming Up in Term 3!

As we look ahead to the remainder of Term 3, students have some exciting events coming up.

• On Thursday 20 August our Year 5 and 6 students will visit Science Works for a day of adventure and inquiry.
• Monday 24 August will be a Whole School Dress Up Day to celebrate Children’s Book Week 2026 (22 August – 28 August). Please bring a gold coin donation to go towards the SVT-led fundraiser for School Improvement and come along dressed as your favourite book/literary or movie character! 
• We have our Father’s Day Stall running on Thursday 3 September, followed by our Father’s Day Breakfast on 4 September 2026.
• We will also host our Junior School Disco on Friday 11 September. Please ensure you have provided consent and payment for your child/children via Compass for this event by Friday 4 September. You can contact the General Office on (03) 9760 4900 with any questions regarding this event. 

We look forward to engaging with our Junior School students and families and making some special memories at these fantastic school events and activities.

Early Years Kinder – 3-Year-Old Program

Learning About Body Safety

Our Puggle Group has been exploring body safety, learning to recognise safe and unsafe feelings, listen to our bodies, understand personal boundaries and speak up when something doesn’t feel right. We explored these ideas through My Body! What I Say Goes! by Jayneen Sanders, including recognising early warning signs in our bodies.

To extend our learning, each child created a “Trusted Adults Hand”, drawing around their hand and identified the adults they know they can trust and talk to when they need help. This experience supported Puggles to recognise their support networks and build confidence in speaking up about their feelings, boundaries and safety.

Block City

Our Puggle group worked together in groups to build towers. Each group built a tower using all the blocks with one colour. When they were complete, we put them aside. The following week, when the children came into kinder, they were immediately drawn to the block area where our tall buildings were placed on the floor. Vanessa set the children a challenge to try and drive a big car between the towers without knocking them down. A rule was made that if we knocked a tower down, we had to stop driving and rebuild the tower before continuing. Children used slow, careful motions with their driving and maneuvered their bodies carefully to avoid knocking the towers down. When a tower got knocked down, everyone stopped driving and worked together to rebuild the tower.

This challenge activity gave the children a chance to practice spatial and body awareness. It also supported patience and shared problem solving.

Exploring, Questioning and Discovering

Our Puggle Group enjoyed reading Who Sank the Boat? by Pamela Allen, a much-loved story about a group of animals who decide to row a boat together. As each animal climbed into the boat, we explored what happened as more weight was added. We were surprised to discover that it was the smallest and lightest animal, the mouse, who ended up sinking the boat!

This story gave our group a wonderful opportunity to explore mathematical concepts and introduce new vocabulary. During our group discussion, we talked about heavy and light, float and sink, big and small, and why the boat eventually sank.

After lunch, we continued our investigation outdoors. We prepared a tub of water and invited our Puggle Group to collect something from the garden to test. We found leaves, rocks, grass and other natural materials and made predictions about whether each item would float or sink. Elly was very excited to find a toy plastic duck, and our group eagerly watched as it floated in the water! It was wonderful to see our Puggle Group making predictions, sharing ideas and discovering what happened through hands-on exploration.

Indigenous Art and Sand Painting

This week we discussed Indigenous artwork. We looked closely at symbols and patterns and the different types of line markings on the pages. We identified shapes and colours used and how the lines and patterns create movement in the artwork. At our art table this week we drew inspiration from a book and created animal sand paintings using similar colours that we saw in the book. Once these were dry, we added dot patterns to show movement in our community art pieces. Children really enjoy sand painting, with many painting their hands to please their touch senses.

Early Years Kinder – 4-Year-Old Program

This Term, we were excited to welcome the Tooth Fairy to kinder as part of our dental incursion. The children learnt about the importance of caring for their teeth, including brushing twice a day and making healthy food choices. They discovered that fresh fruit and vegetables support healthy teeth and bodies, while sugary foods such as lollies, donuts and cakes are best enjoyed only sometimes. The experience encouraged children to build independence and take responsibility for their personal hygiene and wellbeing. It also provided an opportunity to connect with a member of our wider community, ask questions, share experiences and develop an understanding of how community members help us stay healthy and safe. It was a fun and engaging experience that supported the children’s learning about dental health, healthy choices and caring for themselves.

It has been wonderful watching the children embrace the excitement and meaning of Father’s Day. Through creating special gifts, participating in the Father’s Day Stall and sharing their experiences, the children developed fine motor, social and emotional skills while practising gratitude, appreciation, empathy and consideration for others. Making and giving their gifts provided a meaningful opportunity for the children to express their love and appreciation, while also giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment. Our celebrations also recognised and valued the diverse family structures within our kinder community, celebrating dads, granddads, uncles, step-parents and other special people who are important in the children’s lives. It was a joyful and meaningful experience that celebrated the special relationships and connections within our community.

We enjoyed our wonderful Beyond the Gate experience as we explored our local community and visited Chandler Park, including the netball and basketball courts. The children showed growing independence by collecting their safety vests and lanyards and preparing themselves for our adventure, strengthening their understanding of safety and responsibility. With a variety of balls to play with, the children had opportunities to develop their gross motor skills while engaging in social play, sharing equipment, taking turns, inviting others to join and working cooperatively with their friends. These experiences continue to build the children’s confidence, independence, friendships and sense of belonging, while helping them develop a stronger connection to and understanding of their local community.

Senior School Report – End of Term 3

As Term 3 concludes, families are encouraged to note the following important dates for Years 10 – 12.

Year 12

Trial examinations will run from Monday 5^th to Friday 9^th October (first week of Term 4), with VCE VM classes continuing as usual. The Valedictory Dinner will be held on Thursday 15^th October, followed by the final day of classes and Farewell Assembly on Thursday 22^nd October. Senior Sunrise will take place on Friday 23^rd October, before VCAA examinations commence with English on Tuesday 27^th October.

Year 11

Examinations will start from Friday 6^th November (End of Week 5) to Wednesday 11^th November, with VCE VM classes continuing as usual. Exam feedback and catch-up sessions will follow on Thursday 12^th and Friday 13^th November.

Students who achieve below 40% for an exam will be required to complete an exam redemption on Wednesday 25^th November. Year 12 Step-Up will start during Week 7, running from Monday 16^th to Friday 27 November.

Year 10

Examinations will take place during scheduled classes during Weeks 6 and 7 of Term 4, running from Monday 9^th to Thursday 19^th November. Teachers will confirm individual subject dates with their classes.

Like with the Year 11s, Year 10 students who achieve below 40% for an exam will be required to complete an exam redemption after school on Wednesday 25^th November. Year 11 Step-Up will then commence during Week 8, running from Monday 23^rd November to Friday 4^th December.

A Year 10 Celebration Day will be held on Friday 27^th November to recognise students’ achievements and present Year 10 Certificates.

I encourage families to discuss these dates with their children and support them to establish consistent revision routines and manage their time effectively. As we enter this demanding period, success will come from getting the ‘one-percenters’ right: being at school every day, arriving on time, giving their personal best and persevering through rigorous and challenging periods. By consistently completing all coursework and assessments to a satisfactory standard, students will give themselves the best possible opportunity to finish the year successfully and feel proud of what they have achieved.

Take care over the holiday break, and I look forward to a strong showing in Term 4.

Middle School – Term 3 Wrap Up

What a Term it has been across the Middle School! Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students have had plenty of opportunities to get involved, represent the college and contribute to our community.

A major highlight was our Interschool Basketball days, with students across all three year levels taking to the court and representing the college with pride. A special congratulations to our Year 7 girls, who finished an impressive 3rd overall.

There was also plenty of colour around the college! Middle School students got right behind Book Week Dress Up Day, Wear It Purple Day and Footy Colours Day, with a fantastic range of costumes, colours and outfits helping make each event a great celebration of our community.

Term 3 also saw the launch of our student-led Middle School assemblies. Each fortnight, Hannah, Ava and our Middle School leaders from Years 7–9 have been running the show, planning and presenting segments, promoting special events and celebrating our PBE winners.

Speaking of PBE, our students had a huge term! Staff recognised 1,479 Green PBEs, including 642 in Year 7, 307 in Year 8 and 530 in Year 9. Congratulations to Heath K (7A), Scarlett E (8B) and Thenumi G (9A), who led the charge for their respective cohorts.

For Year 9, attention now turns to the Kilcunda Outdoor Adventure Camp in Term 4. We are looking forward to seeing students challenge themselves, work together and make some fantastic memories. Families are encouraged to keep checking Compass for camp updates.

Wellbeing & Inclusion Report

Hands on Learning Program turns 1!

We can’t believe that our Hands on Learning program turned 1 in July. The hands on learning group have achieved a lot in their first year with some big accomplishments around the school such as building the greenhouse, creating the brainwaves boxes, connect four for the café and the biggest achievement of them all is fitting out our new Youth Skills Shed that will be the HoL crew’s new home.

Another exciting update is that hands on learning has now expanded to two days! This allows more students to be part of the program and work on a lot more and bigger projects around the school.

We are always looking for donations, so please see the flyer below if you know of anyone or have anything that you are able to donate to the program. We wouldn’t have been able to complete the fit out of the youth skills shed without donations from some major support from Bowens Mount Evelyn, Burton Industries (Kilsyth South), Bunnings Bayswater, Rotary of Boronia, Westfield and DeWalt.

Dr Nat and Nurse Beck have been working hard to support our students through the Doctors in Secondary School’s Program which has now moved to clinic running every Friday.

All students from Years 7 to 12 can see the doctor or nurse on their own.

Elite Basketball Program

The Elite Basketball Program has made an exciting start this semester, providing students in Years 6 and 7 with opportunities to develop their basketball skills, knowledge and understanding of high-performance sport.

A major highlight of the program has been the continued growth of our partnership with the Knox Basketball Grassroots Program. Each week, NBL1 Knox Raiders Women’s Development coach and Grassroots Program Coordinator Hannah de Kretser has visited the school to support the delivery of practical basketball sessions. These sessions have helped students improve their individual skills, teamwork, communication and understanding of different game situations.

Hannah has also contributed to several theory lessons, helping students connect their classroom learning with the expectations and experiences of athletes and coaches competing at higher levels. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and willingness to share her experiences have been extremely valuable, giving students an insight into training methods, coaching, preparation and pathways within basketball.

Students recently travelled to the State Basketball Centre for an excursion, where they explored the facilities and observed the type of environment used by high-level athletes and teams. This experience allowed students to see how professional training facilities operate and helped bring their classroom learning to life. Students were also generously provided with tickets to attend the Knox Raiders NBL1 Women’s Qualifying final where they saw Hannah apart of the coaching staff, giving them another opportunity to experience high-level basketball firsthand.

We are looking forward to building on these experiences throughout the remainder of the semester and into Term 4. The program will continue its partnership with Knox Basketball, with another visit to the State Basketball Centre already booked. Students will also participate in a new excursion to Ball 360 in Cranbourne, where they will take part in further basketball development and training activities. We thank Hannah and the Knox Basketball Team for their continued support of our students and the Elite Basketball Program.

Year 5 Green Grand Prix – Tinkercad Design Workshop

As part of our exciting Green Grand Prix, our Year 5 students were fortunate to welcome Nicky from Monash University for a hands-on Tinkercad workshop.

Using iPads, students learned how to use Tinkercad, a 3D design program, to create their own driver figurines ready for 3D printing. Throughout the session, students developed valuable skills in digital design, spatial thinking, creativity, precision, and problem-solving while learning how digital models are designed for real-world production.

Once printed, these unique figurines will become the drivers of the vehicles students have designed and built from recycled materials. Powered by Sphero robots, the vehicles will soon be put through a series of exciting Green Grand Prix challenges that will test their design, engineering and coding skills.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and are eagerly looking forward to the next Monash University incursion, where they will put their creations to the test!

Congratulations, Foundation Students!

Our Foundation students have been eagerly counting down the days to the much-anticipated 100 Days of School, and what a wonderful celebration it was!

The day began in true VIP style, with our students dressing to impress as they walked the red carpet and posed for photos in front of our glamorous photo wall. Their smiles and excitement set the tone for a truly memorable day.

Students then made their way to the Performing Arts Building, where they proudly presented their special 100 Days of School speeches to their families, Grade 5 Buddies, and our kindergarten visitors. We were incredibly proud of the confidence, enthusiasm, and effort each student put into writing and delivering their speeches. It was a joy to see just how much they have grown over their first 100 days of learning.

After the presentations, students enjoyed some delicious cupcakes before taking part in a variety of fun and engaging 100 Days of School activities. From counting and creating to laughing and celebrating together, the day was filled with smiles, learning, and special memories.

Congratulations to our amazing Foundation students on reaching this exciting milestone. We can’t wait to see all they continue to achieve throughout the rest of the year!

Myuna Farm Visit

Foundation-Grade 2: Our Changing World

This term, our Foundation–Grade 2 students have been learning all about ‘Our Changing World’. They have been discovering how the world around us changes and grows, exploring everything from the seasons and weather to landscapes, sustainability, biodiversity, and how people and animals depend on each other and adapt to their environments.

One of the highlights of the term was our exciting excursion to Myuna Farm, where our learning came to life! Students had the opportunity to visit the nursery and meet some of the adorable baby animals. The fluffy bunnies were a favourite, with everyone amazed by just how soft their fur was.

There were plenty of exciting experiences throughout the day, including a fun tractor ride through giant muddy puddles, spotting fruit bats in the wetlands, and feeding some of the farm’s larger animals. During the farm show, students learnt about how farm animals provide us with important resources, such as milk, and many even had the chance to milk a goat—a memorable experience for everyone!

Of course, no trip to the farm would be complete without our gumboots! Splashing through muddy puddles brought lots of smiles and laughter, making it a day to remember.

It was a fantastic day of hands-on learning, curiosity, and fun, and a wonderful way to bring our classroom learning into the real world. We are so proud of the enthusiasm, kindness, and curiosity our students showed throughout the day.

2026 Book Week Wrap-Up & ​Boronia K-12 College Student Choice Book Awards Winners Announcement

The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual Book Week event returned in 2026 with the theme “Symphony of Stories”. The event took place between August 22-28. Every year, the CBCA holds a Book Week across Australia to promote the importance of reading and the joy that children can find in it. Schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children come together to celebrate Australian Literature in a whole host of events and parades, with the Reading Week culminating with the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.

Here at BK12, Book Week started with a whole school Book Week Dress-up Day and the annual Book Week Parade for the Junior School as well as lots of other exciting events and activities organised by Staff and the Student Voice Team which occurred around the college at recess and lunchtimes throughout Book Week.

In our college Library for 11 years now, starting in 2015, our students have voted for their favourite Book Week Books in the Boronia K-12 Student Choice Book Awards.

Students of BK12 read the 2026 CBCA’s Early Childhood and Picture Book shortlisted books and nominated our Boronia K-12 Student Choice Book Awards for Best Story and Best Illustrations. The books were on display in the Library from the start of this term and were read during library sessions and lunchtimes when the library was open. The students read as many of the books as they wanted to and filled out a voting slip for each book they read and placed it in the ballot box.

Students of BK12 have voted for the following books as their Book Week 2026 Boronia K-12 College Student Choice Book Award for Best Story and Best Illustrations. A 2026 Boronia K-12 College Student Choice Book Plate has been placed on the inside cover of each of these 3 books.

Lamont Book Fair

COMING SOON: Term 4, 19-29 October 2026

Lamont Book Fair will be arriving sometime on Monday 19 October 2026 and run over two weeks.

The commission earned from the sales of this annual library fundraiser enables additional fiction and general non-fiction reading materials to be obtained and added to the library collections for all students to borrow and enjoy reading independently in class, at home or with their family. 

Week 1: Foundation to Year 6 classes will visit and preview the book fair and write a wish list during their library sessions.

Week 2: The book fair will be open for personal shopping after school for parents, students and any staff.

Student Borrowing Guidelines

All primary and secondary classes will have opportunities to visit the College Library on a weekly basis to borrow books for their independent reading programs. While the ELC classes with Michelle and team will visit the College Library on a regular basis for a story and the occasional activity.

​Library Bags

All Foundation to Year 6​ students require a library bag to help protect their library books if they wish to take them home to read. 

Number of books students can borrow:

Foundation: 1 book

Year 1 & Year 2: up to 2 books

Year 3 – Year 6: up to 4 books

Year 7 – Year 12: up to 4 books

Loan period is 14 days

All students can borrow library books for up to 14 days. Students who require more time to finish reading books can renew books any time within the 14-day loan period. 

​Overdue library books

Students who have overdue library books will not be able to borrow until all overdue books have been cleared either by returning or renewing their books.

Please encourage your students to look after their library books and return or re-borrow their books on time as this will avoid disappointment.
