A Day In The Life…

Growing Through Primary at BK-12

As students progress from Foundation to Year 6, they grow not only in academic capability, but also in confidence, independence and leadership. From learning to read and build number fluency in the early years to leading assemblies and mentoring younger students in the upper years, every stage of Primary builds purposefully toward the next.

At BK-12, we are committed to strong foundations, high expectations and a supportive community — ensuring every child is known, challenged and empowered to flourish. Because that’s what we are here for – to make sure everyone in our BK-12 community is able to Belong, Achieve, Succeed!

8:35am – Before the Bell

8:48am – Ready to Learn!

The music plays and all students line up outside their classrooms, ready to begin the day. After greeting their teacher, students complete the roll and review the day’s learning intentions.

Clear routines and high expectations help every student feel calm, prepared and ready to learn

From 8.35am students start making their way to school. You might walk or ride to school and use the school crossings of get dropped off in our ‘kiss and go’ section. Breakfast Club is on at our Student Lead Café Foot of the Hills every day! Come and say hi to the Wellbeing team and have an extras piece of toast or fruit to see you through the morning.

9.00am – Numeracy Lesson

At BK-12, Mathematics is prioritised across the Primary School. Every day begins with a dedicated Numeracy session from Foundation through to Year 6.

In F–2, students build strong foundations using the Explicit Mathematics Program, a research-backed program grounded in the Science of Learning.

In Years 3–6, students deepen their understanding through explicit instruction, retrieval practice and rich problem-solving tasks that develop fluency, reasoning and confidence. This structured, consistent approach ensures mathematical knowledge builds year after year.

9.45am – Brain Food

A short Brain Food break helps all students refuel before moving into their Core Literacy session.

In Foundation to Year 2, students develop strong decoding and spelling skills through Little Learners Love Literacy – a systematic synthetic phonics approach.

In Years 3–6, literacy expands to include rich vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, structured writing and purposeful discussion.

Across all year levels, explicit teaching using our College Wide Instructional Model ensures students develop the literacy skills they need for school life and beyond.

10.40am – Mentor Session

Wellbeing is explicitly taught every day at BK-12. During Mentor Session, students develop social and emotional skills, explore our Positive Behaviour Matrix and building respectful relationships.

As students move through Primary, they take increasing responsibility for their behaviour, learning goals and interactions with others. We know that when students feel safe, known and supported, they thrive academically.

Fridays are especially fun! Mr Stone, Director of Junior School and School Wide Positive Support Program lead, supports our Year 6 leaders to design fun and engaging house challenges, building our house spirit and connecting to what is happening across College! We might be running laps ready for athletics carnival, playing a variety of team building games or even having a penalty shoot out to earn house points during the World Cup!

11.00am – Snack and Playtime

Students eat before heading outside to enjoy supervised play in our well-equipped outdoor spaces.

From playground games like tag, 4 square and basketball to quieter spaces and structured activities, play supports physical development, cooperation and problem-solving.

11.30am – Specialist Learning

Our specialist program develops the whole child. Across the week, students participate in:

  • Physical Education
  • Performing Arts & Music
  • STEAM in our dedicated centre
  • Auslan / Spanish
  • Library

These sessions build creativity, collaboration, communication and physical capability. As students move through the school, they develop increasing independence and skill mastery within these specialist areas.

In Year 6, our students get to choose electives from the Arts and Technology sphere. Instead of Music and STEAM they choose 4 elective subjects (2 per Semester) to work alongside our Year 7s. They can try something new or follow a passion.

1.20pm – Lunch

Lunchtime provides extended opportunities for social connection and play. Students may participate in organised lunch clubs, house activities or informal games with friends. They might head to the library to read.

Cross-age connections are an important part of our P–12 environment – sometimes there will be staff versus students games in the gym. Will the year 12s beat the teachers in volleyball tournament this time?

Lucky for us our Canteen is open everyday! If it’s a special lunch order opportunity for Christmas or a cold icy pole on a warm day, our Canteen provides healthy sandwiches and snacks as well as a few treat options for lunch orders or to walk up and purchase.

2.05pm – Last Period of the Day

The final session of the day may include exploring our Big Question through inquiry learning or collaborative projects. Inquiry learning encourages curiosity and critical thinking and is how we explore the curriculum requirements of humanities in the Junior School.

In F-2 our Skills Sessions we work on developing gross motor, fine motor and social skills through structured activities every second Friday. Sometimes we may even get to work with our Year 5 buddies at this time!

On alternate weeks, Primary students attend Junior School Assembly in our Performing Arts Centre. Assemblies celebrate Student of the Week, House achievements and showcase student learning. Older students have opportunities to present, perform and lead, building confidence and public speaking skills.

3.00pm – Home Time

Our school day finishes at 3:00pm for all students from Foundation to Year 12. This shared timetable strengthens our sense of unity as a College.

Some students head straight home, while others attend Out of Hours School Care, provided by Camp Australia. Each day concludes with a sense of achievement, connection and readiness to return tomorrow.
