Core Learning

At Boronia K-12 College, we teach the essentials exceptionally well, while inspiring curiosity, creativity and a love of learning.

We believe every child deserves the opportunity to experience success and to develop a genuine love of learning. Our teaching is built on strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, with lessons that are carefully planned, engaging and responsive to each student’s needs. Through evidence-informed teaching practices, explicit instruction and meaningful opportunities to apply their learning, students develop confidence, independence and the skills they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.

As students grow, they are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, think critically and make connections across their learning. Rich inquiry experiences, specialist programs and authentic learning opportunities allow students to explore their interests while developing creativity, collaboration and communication skills. We are committed to challenging every learner, celebrating growth and ensuring every child leaves our Junior School well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Literacy and Numeracy in Foundation to Year 2

The early years are a critical time for building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy. In Foundation to Year 2, our programs are carefully sequenced and evidence-informed, ensuring students develop the essential skills, knowledge and confidence needed for future success.

Our literacy program provides explicit instruction in phonics, reading, spelling, handwriting and writing, while fostering a love of books and language. This is delivered through the Little Learners Love Literacy Program – a fun and engaging program focussed on a structured synthetic phonics approach connected to the science of reading research. Students are supported to ‘crack the code’ when it comes to learning the letters and sounds. Then, they are supported to become fluent readers, thoughtful writers and confident communicators through daily opportunities to practise, apply and extend their learning.

Picture story books are an integral part of literacy learning in our Foundation to Year 2 classrooms. Rich, engaging mentor texts provide authentic opportunities for students to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills while fostering a love of literature. Through shared reading and discussion, students build vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking, explore different text types and language features, and use quality literature as inspiration for their own writing. Picture story books also encourage curiosity, creativity and empathy, supporting students to make meaningful connections with the world around them.

The mathematics curriculum in Foundation to Year 2 is delivered through The Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP). This provides students with a strong foundation in mathematical understanding through carefully sequenced, evidence-informed teaching and learning. Daily lessons combine explicit instruction, hands-on learning experiences and purposeful fluency practice to develop fluency, confidence and problem-solving skills. Regular review and opportunities to apply new and prior learning help students build automatic recall while developing a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts. Our teachers use ongoing assessment to ensure every student is appropriately supported, challenged and able to experience success.

Literacy and Numeracy 3-6

Our Years 3–6 literacy program builds on the strong foundations established in the early years, supporting students to become confident, capable and thoughtful communicators. Through explicit teaching and rich learning experiences, students develop advanced reading comprehension, expand their vocabulary and refine their writing across a range of text types. A carefully sequenced knowledge-rich curriculum exposes students to high-quality texts, broadens their understanding of the world and strengthens their ability to think critically, communicate effectively and write for a variety of authentic purposes and audiences.

Our Years 3–6 mathematics program develops confident and capable mathematicians through evidence-informed teaching, explicit instruction and meaningful problem-solving opportunities. Students deepen their understanding of number, measurement, geometry, statistics and algebra while learning to apply mathematical thinking to real-world situations. A carefully sequenced curriculum builds conceptual understanding over time, ensuring new learning is connected to prior knowledge while providing regular opportunities to practise, reason, explain their thinking and develop mathematical fluency and confidence.

In all year levels, teachers use ongoing assessment to identify each student’s strengths and next steps, ensuring every learner is appropriately supported and challenged as they grow.
