Starting Prep is a special milestone for parents and students and you only get one first day

Getting Started at Boronia K-12 College

We pride ourselves on a welcoming and comprehensive Transition Program that allows students and families to become familiar with the school and build their knowledge, over a range of events, so that the only new thing that happens in February 2024 is your child dressing in their school uniform for the first time.

As a parent of a future Prep student, we understand that the process of selecting your child’s future school and their transition into this new phase of their life can sometimes seem overwhelming. As such, we at Boronia K-12 College, aim to provide families with the required support network and information both in the months leading up to them starting and across their first year.

Our Prep students are in a junior learning space, nicknamed ‘The Joy Bubble’, where they will be until the end of Year 2. This space is set up to allow easy access to hands on learning experiences, a range of engaging books and digital technologies. The space allows students to work both in individual classrooms, as well as in larger groupings in shared areas. This flexibility is invaluable to create exciting and engaging learning experiences. It also means a community of learners can be created within the building, so that students feel comfortable working with students and teachers in other classes.

It is important to us that we know each new child joining the college. As such, the process of gaining information begins the year before – with kinder visits, transition paperwork and observations during transition day activities.

We then begin each school year, with ‘Getting to Know You’ interviews. During these meetings you will work with child’s teacher, forming a collaborative partnership to share information on the academic and social/emotional needs of your child. Teachers and students will also engage in a range of assessments to ensure we know the starting point for each child’s educational journey at the college.

The best way to know and understand a school community is by visiting it. If you haven’t done so already, contact us on (03) 9760 4900 and book a tour to see our program in action.

Transition to Prep

Boronia K-12 College Kinder students experience a seamless transition into our Prep program. During their time at Kinder they regularly participate in aspects of our wider school program. As much as possible they are part of events such as Junior School Assemblies, Book Week, Easter and Halloween celebrations (to name a few) as well as the many opportunities they have to enjoy our outdoor play spaces, playgrounds and library. This coupled with visits from key College staff ensures that all students feel comfortable as they enter the next phase of their learning.

For our Transition to Prep program, students experience 5 formal transition sessions in term 4, participating in structured play and learning experiences with other students who will be a part of the year level cohort. This allows our teachers to see our mix of students, their friendships, strengths and personalities to assist with forming classes for the following year. We also consult with the Kinder educators to understand our newest additions to the Junior School in a wholistic way.
